NICK STEWART BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Nick Stewart was born on March 15th, 1910 in New York City, New York with the birth name Horace Winfred Stewart, born to Joseph and Eva Stewart. Nick Stewart became one of the first African-American character actors to be inducted in to the Academy of Television Arts and Science's new Archive of American Television.
His career in the entertainment industry began working as a dancer at both the Cotton Club and Hoofers Club.
He later also began performing on Broadway appearing in such productions as, "Swingin' the Dream" and "Louisiana Purchase". In addition to his early stage work he also broke into the film industry appearing on such films as, "Go West Young Man" (1936) starring Mae West, Warren William, Randolph Scott, Alice Brady and Lyle Talbot, "International Crime" (1938) starring Rod La Rocque, Astrid Allwyn and William Pawley, "Wall Street Cowboy" (1939) starring Roy Rogers, George 'Gabby' Hayes and Raymond Hatton, "Cabin in the Sky" (1943) starring alongside Ethel Waters, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Lena Horne and Louis Armstrong, "My Son the Hero" (1943) starring Patsy Kelly, Roscoe Karns and Joan Blair, "Colonel Effingham's Raid" (1946) starring Charles Coburn, Joan Bennett, William Eythe, Allyn Joslyn, Thurston Hall and Elizabeth Patterson, and "No Holds Barred" (1952) starring The Bowery Boys, Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bennie Bartlett and Marjorie Reynolds. Many of his film roles were un-credited, however that did not discourage Stewart from continuing to work in the industry.
In addition to his film work he also did voice over work on the 1946 Walt Disney classic film, "Song of the South" and the video game, "Splash Mountain". He then lent his voice to Disneyland's amusement park providing the voice, Br'er Bear, for Splash Mountain.
Stewart also added a couple television credits to his resume over the course of his career as an actor such as, "Mister Ed", "The Amos 'n Andy Show", "Ben Casey", "Ramar of the Jungle", "Ironside" and "The Jack Benny Program".
He married once throughout his lifetime to Edna Stewart in 1941 and they had three children together. Along with his wife they founded the Los Angeles' Ebony Showcase Theatre in 1950 which continued to grow and relocated to various areas of Los Angeles, sadly in 1992 they lost the theatre due to financial reasons. The couple fought to keep the theatre going and remained married until he passed away on December 18th, 2000 in Los Angeles, California from natural causes.
