NANCY GATES BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Nancy Gates was born on February 1st, 1926 in Dallas, Texas with the middle name Jane. Her career as an actress began when she was just a teenager. At the age of fifteen she was signed to a contract with RKO Pictures.
Some of her early film roles included, "Hitler's Children" (1943), "The Great Gildersleeve" (1942), "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942) starring Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, Agnes Moorehead and Ray Collins with narration done by Orson Welles, "Gildersleeve's Bad Day" (1943), "Behind the Rising Son" (1943) and "This Land Is Mine" (1943).
Gates then took a break from pursuing her career after starring in the film, "Roll, Thunder Roll" (1949) starring Jim Bannon, Don Reynolds, I. Stanford Jolley, Glenn Strange, Emmett Lynn, Lane Bradford and William Fawcett, and he did not return to the industry until 1952 in the film, "The Greatest Show on Earth" starring Cornel Wilde, Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, James Stewart, Dorothy Lamour, Lawrence Tierney, Lyle Bettger, Henry Wilcoxon and Gloria Grahame, in an un-credited role.
However, she did manage to jump back into the industry with ease and soon was adding more substantial film roles to her resume such as, "Target Hong Kong" (1953) co-starring Richard Denning, Richard Loo and Philip Ahn, "Torch Song" (1953) starring Joan Crawford, Michael Wilding, Harry Morgan, Gig Young, Marjorie Rambeau, Dorothy Patrick, Eugene Loring, Maidie Norman and James Todd, "Hell's Half Acre" (1954) co-starring Wendell Corey, Evelyn Keyes, Keye Luke, Marie Windsor, Philip Ahn and Elsa Lanchester, "Suddenly" (1954) starring Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden, James Gleason and "Stranger on Horseback" (1955) starring Joel McCrea, Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine, John McIntire and Miroslava.
Along with film work she also appeared in a variety of television series throughout her career as an actress, some of which were, "Studio 57", "The Lone Wolf", "The Star and the Story", "The Red Skelton Hour', "Kraft Theater", "Trackdown", "77 Sunset Strip", "The Third Man", "Lock Up", "Riverboat", "Bronco", "The Lineup" and "The Detectives' among many others.
In 1960 her final film role was in, "Comanche Station" starring Randolph Scott, Claude Akins, Skip Homeier, Richard Rust and Rand Brooks and then she followed with a couple more television appearances in the series, "Perry Mason", "The Virginian", "The Loner", "Burke's Law", "Bonanza" and her final television appearance in, "The Mod Squad" (1969).
She then retired from acting and chose to focus on her personal life with her only husband, William Hayes who she married in 1948. Together the couple had four children and remained married until he passed away in 1992.
