MOE HOWARD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Moe Howard was born on June 19th, 1897 in Brooklyn, New York with the birth name Moses Horwitz born to Solomon and Jennie Horwitz.  He was the fourth son born of five brothers total.

As a young boy he developed such an interest in acting he would actually skip school to go to the theater and watch different shows.  His school work began to suffer and after completing only two months of High School he dropped out to pursue an acting career.

He first became involved in acting in 1909 working with Vitagraph films offering his services free of charge to run errands and do anything needed to help put on set.  Soon he was given the opportunity to appear in some small roles.

When he was seventeen years old he decided to join a troupe and performed on a boat as well as continued to work in films appearing in a number of two-reeler shorts.  Along with his brother, Shemp and Larry Fine the three men came together to form a vaudeville comic troupe which later became very well known as, "The Three Stooges".  They signed with Columbia Pictures and made a total of 190 short films.

Of all the Three Stooges shorts the only one that all three men write the entire script for was, "Punch Bunch" and "Men in Black" was their first and only film that received an Academy Award nomination.

Throughout his entire acting career he would appear in more than 250 films.  He also was in the process of writing his autobiography when he passed away before it was completed, therefore the title was changed to, "Moe Howard and the Three Stooges" and was still published.

He is so well known by many for his distinctive haircut which actually began when he was a young boy and his mother refused to cut his hair so he cut his own hair with a pair of scissors creating the helmet or bowl cut.

Moe's character in the Three Stooges was always playing, 'The Boss' as he would order the other two around, make fun of them and always be the one in charge.  However he also acted as their protector and would keep them out of harms way.  This mirrored his off stage personality as a very caring, kind, generous and nurturing man.

As the career of The Three Stooges continued, Columbia Pictures sold the library of short films to the "Screen Gems" Brand which actually helped their career gain a whole new fan base.  With this career move the three men starred in a number of now feature full length movies such as, "Have Rocket, Will Travel", "Snow White and the Three Stooges", "The Three Stooges in Orbit" and "The Outlaws Is Coming".

The Three Stooges also made a number of live appearances, however as they got older it was more difficult to maintain the level of slapstick comedy they were used to and so their careers began to slow down.  Moe became involved in real estate and also collected profits from sales of The Three Stooges merchandise.  In 1983 Moe and The Three Stooges were also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Moe Howard married only once to Helen Howard on June 7th, 1925 and they remained married until he passed away on May 4th, 1975 from Lung Cancer in Los Angeles, California.  Moe Howard is interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, California.  His wife soon passed away in October 1975 and she is buried next to him.  The couple had two children, Joan Howard Maurer and Paul Howard.
