MICKEY ROURKE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Mickey Rourke was born on September 16th, 1952 in Schenectady, New York with the birth name Philip Andre Rourke Jr. born to Philip Andre Rourke, Sr. and Ann Rourke. At the age of six his parents divorced and his mother later re-married a man by the name of Eugene Addis, who worked as a police officer in Florida. He relocated to live in Florida where he earned his high school diploma from Miami Beach Senior High in 1971.
As a teenager, he excelled in athletics and studied self defense at a young age, later turning his focus on boxing. He was only twelve years old when he won his first amateur boxing match and went on to compile a amateur record of twenty wins and six defeats.
He then decided to take a break from pursuing a career as a professional boxer and instead turned his sites on a career in entertainment. He first developed an interest in acting during high school when he appeared in a school production of, "The Serpent". Later when he decided to take a break from his boxing, a friend of his got him a part in a production of, "Deathwatch" at the University of Miami.
Soon, Rourke decided the enjoyed acting and first went to New York to study the art before beginning to work in the film industry. He debuted in the film, "1941" (1976) which soon followed with roles in such films as, "Body Heat" (1981) and "Rumble Fish" (1983).
Some of his more prominent film roles include, "9½ Weeks" (1986), "Barfly" (1987), "Angel Heart" (1987) and "The Rainmaker" (1997). In the early 90's, Rourke had an urge to return back to his love of boxing and he fought internationally in a number of matches. He knew that he was a lot older than his competitors, but it was more of a personal challenge for him to see if he was still a talented boxer.
In 1995 he retired from boxing and once again, returned to pursuing his career in acting. He continued to add such feature film roles to his credits such as, "Buffalo 66" (1998), "The Pledge" (2001), "Get Carter" (2000), "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" (2001), "Man on Fire" (2004) and "Sin City" (2005), a role for which he won a number of awards from the Chicago Film Critics Association, The Irish Film and Television Awards as well as the Online Film Critics Society.
Although he was a highly successful actor, he did have a reputation in Hollywood as being quite difficult to work with on set. Such an example happened in 2000 when he walked off the set of the film, "Luck of the Draw" when producers would not allow him to include his dog in the film. Also, in 2004 he was arrested for spousal abuse. However, despite his bad temper reputation, he has remained a highly desired actor.
As his career has progressed he has continued to gain a larger fan base. When he starred in the 2008 film, "The Wrestler", he won a Golden Globe award, a BAFTA award and also received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. Other more recent film roles include, "The Informers" (2008), "Iron Man 2" (2010), "The Expendables" (2010), "Marble City" (2012) and soon to release in 2013, "The Storm" and "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For".
