MARY STEENBURGEN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Mary Steenburgen was born on February 8th, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas with the middle name Nell, born to Nell and Maurice Steenburgen. As a youngster she developed an interest in acting and participated in drama at school. She was raised in Little Rock, North Arkansas and after high school in 1972 she relocated to New York to study acting at new York's Neighborhood Playhouse.
She was first discovered when she was in the reception room at Paramount Studio's and actor, Jack Nicholson took notice of her. He was working as a director on the film, "Goin' South" (1978) and cast her as the lead.
Soon more prominent film roles followed such as, "Time After Time" (1979) and "Melvin and Howard" (1980), a role for which she won her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
As her career progressed she added such film credits to her resume as, "Cross Creek" (1983), "Back to the Future Part III" (1990), "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (1993), "Nixon" (1995), "Wish You Were Dead" (2002), "Elf" (2003) and "Joan of Arcadia" (2003).
In addition to appearing in a number of successful films she has also made appearances on such television series as, "Ink" (1996), "Gulliver's Travels" (1996), "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2000-2009), "Bored to Death" (2011) and "Outlaw" (2011).
More recently she has returned to films appearing in such features as, "Step Brothers" (2008), "Four Christmases" (2008), "The Proposal" (2009) and "The Help" (2011).
Along with her acting career, Steenburgen is also a supporter of various humanitarian causes. in 2006 she was honored with a honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas. Steenburgen also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to the Industry.
Mary Steenburgen has married twice throughout her lifetime, first to Malcolm McDowell in 1980 and they had two children together before the marriage came to an end in 1990. She then married actor Ted Danson in 1995 and they remain together today and reside in Los Angeles. Both her children also went on to pursue careers in entertainment, her daughter Lilly is an actress and her son, Charlie is a producer and director.
