MARTIN SHEEN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Martin Sheen was born on August 3rd, 1940 in Dayton, Ohio with the birth name Ramon Antonio Gerard Estevez to parents Francisco Estévez and Mary Ann Phelan. His parents both immigrated to America, his father was from Spain and his mother from Ireland. He was one of ten children. He graduated from Chaminade High School and even though is parents did not approve of his interest in pursuing a career as an actor, he chose to relocate to New York City and see if he had a chance. He purposely flunked his college entrance exam to the university of Dayton so he could follow his dream of acting instead.
When he arrived in New York, along with a couple other aspiring actors, he developed a theater company hoping that one of the productions he would star in would gain him attention from critics. He did a number of stage productions and soon was appearing on Broadway in, "The Subject Was Roses" (1964) for which he was nominated for the 1965 Tony Award for Supporting or Featured Actor in a Drama.
It did not take long for Sheen to begin making a name for himself. Sheen then began working on Television in such series as, "Nightmare" (1963), "Live Bait" (1968), the television movie, "That Certain Summer" (1972), "Catholics" (1973) starring with Trevor Howard, Raf Vallone and Cyril Cusack, and on the pilot, "Such Dust As Dreams Are Made On" (1973). He also was seen on the big screen in such features as, "Catch-22" (1970) starring alongside Alan Arkin, Bob Balaban, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Olimpia Carlisi, Marcel Dalio, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Paula Prentiss, Jon Voight and Orson Welles, "Badlands" (1973) starring with Sissy Spacek, Ramon Bieri and Warren Oates, "Apocalypse Now" (1979) and "The Final Countdown" (1980).
Throughout his career he appeared in more than sixty five feature films. Some of his other well known roles were on, "Wall Street" (1987) co-starring his son Charlie Sheen, Daryl Hannah and Michael Douglas, "Catch Me If You Can" (2002) starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, "The Departed" (2006) and "Bobby" (2006) which was written and directed by his son, Emilio Estevez and starred such actresses as, Demi Moore, Heather Graham and Sharon Stone.
Many viewers and fans associate Martin Sheen with his television role that he was nominated for Six Emmy's as President Josiah Bartlet in, "The West Wing" (1999). He has received numerous other honors throughout his acting career such as winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor on a TV Series Drama in 2001 and winning an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series on the sitcom, "Murphy Brown" (1988). He also made appearances on the series, "Two and a Half Men" (2003) that stars his son, Charlie Sheen. For his appearances on this series, Martin Sheen also received a nomination for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
Martin Sheen has remained married to his one and only wife, Janet Sheen whom he wed in 1961 and together they have four children, Charlie, Emilio, Renee and Ramon and they remain married today.
Martin is also quite involved in politics and a number of causes he believes very strongly about. He is a strong advocate for the closing of the Schools of the Americas which is a military base that trains Latin American soldiers where it is suspected they were taught techniques of torture and political terror. He was also sentenced to three years probation when he trespassed an Air Force base during a protest against the United States building a missile defense system. He has been arrested more than seventy times for liberal protests.
Martin Sheen currently resides in Malibu, California and his latest known work will be on the big screen in 2012 in, "The Amazing Spiderman".
