MARTIN BALSAM BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Martin Balsam was born on November 4th, 1919 in the Bronx, New York with the birth name Martin Henry Balsam to parents, Albert and Lillian Balsam.  It was first in High School, that he gained an interest in acting when he joined the drama club.  After he graduated from High School he continued to educate himself in acting by attending Manhattan's progressive New School.

He was drafted during World War II but directly after completing his service, Balsam returned back to studying acting.  He was studying acting at the Actors Studio in New York after being selected by Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg in 1947.  He also found part time work at the Radio City Music Hall as an usher.

Now with decent training under his belt, he decided to give it a chance working as a stage actor.  He began in the late 40's with a number of Broadway roles.  After a couple years of small parts, Balsam got his big break with a role in "The Rose Tattoo" in 1951.  This role lead to a number of small television roles and a couple more stage performances.

In 1954, Balsam was offered one of the biggest roles thus far of his career, a member of the cast "On the Waterfront".  This role followed with a number of other television roles such as, "The United States Steel Hour", "The Philco Television Playhouse", "Goodyear Television Playhouse", "Studio One" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".

He was also given the chance to appear on a number of roles on the big screen such as "Psycho" (1960), "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961), "Cape Fear" (1961), "The Carpetbaggers" (1964) and "A Thousand Clowns" (1965) for which he earned an Academy Award for his role.

Overall, his career spanned over fifty years and he did a number of Italian films.  He fell in love with Italy and for the most part, lived overseas, only traveling back to the United States occasionally for film roles.  Martin also worked for a couple seasons on the television series "Archie Bunker's Place" (1979).

He married a total of three times throughout his lifetime.  His first wife was Pearl Somner which was a very short marriage lasting from 1952 to 1954.  His second wife was Joyce Van Patten whom he wed in 1959 and had one child before this marriage ended in 1962.  His third and final wife was Irene Miller from 1963 through his death on February 13th, 1996 and he had two more children with her.

He passed away in Rome, Italy from a heart attack at the age of seventy six.  He was survived by his third wife Irene Miller and three children, Adam, Zoe and Talia.
