LINDA DARNELL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Linda Darnell, born, Monetta Eloyse Darnell on Tuesday October 16th, 1923 in Dallas, Texas, USA.  Her parents were Calvin and Pearl and her mother was a relentless stage mother.  She was one of 5 children and her father was a postal worker.  At a young age, she was pushed into modeling at the age of 11, but due to her appearance, many thought she was much older.

A Hollywood scout visiting the Dallas-Fort Worth area, was impressed enough to set up a screen test for Darnell, but they soon discovered she was too young and sent her home telling her to come back again when she was older.  She used the next couple years to better herself as an actress working at local theaters.

Returning to California in 1939 to debut in "A Hotel For Women". Her next film came later that same year, and it was one of her very best ,"Daytime Wife".  By the age of 15, she signed a contract with Fox studios.  "Stardust" (1940) was her third film and was a hit, loosely based on her own life.  Followed by an appearance in "Blood and Sand" and "Rise And Shine".   Chosen to embody the Virgin Mary in 1943's "Song of Bernadette" and then United Artists cast Darnell on loan-out for a Chekhov adaptation, "Summer Storm" (1944).

The rest of the decade found her portraying  roles that displayed her as willful but troubled,  "Hangover Square" (1945), "Fallen Angel" (1945), "Anna and the King of Siam" (1946), and "A Letter to Three Wives" (1948).  She received good notices for "No Way Out" (1950).

Darnell was living a successful career life, but not such a great personal life. Alcohol dependence and failed marriages lead her down the wrong life path.  She married and divorced three times.  First she married J Peverell Marley. Director of photography. They eloped to Las Vegas on April 18, 1942, but were divorced on February 20, 1951.  Then she wed, Philip Liebmann in Mexico on February 25, 1954, but again was divorced on December 2, 1955 in Mexico.  Her last marriage was to, Merle Roy Robertson, a pilot.  The couple were married on March 3, 1957 in Riverside, California and again another failed marriage ended in divorce on November 23, 1963 after she learned he had impregnated a Yugoslavian actress.

Her final film appearance under her contract with Fox studio's was, "Night Without Sleep" (1952).  Her last movie was "Black Spurs", (1965).  She lived for 42 years and was awarded a Star on The Walk of Fame for her excellent work in the movies world.  Linda passed away on October 4th, 1965 from burn complications.  She will and was always known as the "girl with the perfect face".
