LILLI PALMER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Lilli Palmer was born on May 24th, 1914 in Posen, Prussia in Germany with the birth name Lilli Marie Peiser, born to Dr. Alfred Peiser, a surgeon and Rose Lissman, a working actress. She grew up learning three languages, German, French and English and she developed an interest in acting from a young age.
She later went on to study drama in Berlin and soon began working as a stage actress debuting at the age of eighteen. During the rise of Hitler, her family fled to Paris and later, Palmer relocated to England to continue pursuing a career as an actress.
In 1935 she made her film debut on a British film, "Crime Unlimited" and followed this role with more film credits such as, "Secret Agent" (1936) co-starring John Gielgud, Peter Lorre, Madeleine Carroll, Robert Young and Michael Redgrave, "Silent Barriers" (1937) and "The Man with 100 Faces" (1938).
As her career progressed she continued to add more substantial film roles to her resume such as, "Thunder Rock" (1942) starring Michael Redgrave, James Mason and Barbara Mullen and "The Gentle Sex" (1943). Her family then relocated to the united States in 1945 and she began to find more work as a stage actress on Broadway appearing in such productions as, "Bell, Book and Candle" (1950) starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Janice Rule, Elsa Lanchester, Ernie Kovacs and Hermione Gingold, "Venus Observed" (1952) and "The Love of Four Colonels" (1953).
Palmer also began appearing in a number of American made films such as, "Cloak and Dagger" (1946), "Body and Soul" (1947) starring with John Garfield, Hazel Brooks, Anne Revere and William Conrad, "The Long Dark Hall" (1951) and "The Four Poster" (1952). She later returned to Europe and continued to appear in films made there such as, "Between Time and Eternity" (1956) and "The Story of Anastasia" (1957), portraying Anna Anderson, a role for which she won the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Actress.
Along with film roles she also appeared in a variety of television movies and series. Some of her more well known roles were as Mrs. Frank on the television movie, "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1967) and for a brief period she also had her own television show, "The Lilli Palmer Show" (1953) and added series credits for, "The Love Boat", "Peter the Great" and "Derrick".
Lilli Palmer married twice throughout her lifetime, first to Rex Harrison in 1943 and they had one child before the marriage ended in divorce in 1957. She then wed Carlos Thompson in 1957 and they remained together until she passed away from cancer at the age of seventy one in Los Angeles, California. Four years later her widowed husband committed suicide. Her remains are interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.
