LESLIE NIELSEN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Leslie Nielsen was born on February 11th, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada with the birth name Leslie William Nielsen to parents, Mabel Elizabeth and Ingvard Eversen Nielsen. He had two brothers and his family raised him in Tulita. He had a troubled life watching his father be abusive to his mother and siblings so at the age of seventeen he left home and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as an aerial gunner.
He first became interested in acting when he studied at the Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto. Soon he relocated to New York to study at the New York Playhouse. He made his television debut in 1948 in, "Studio One" and his film debut in 1956 in a musical film called, "The Vagabond King".
Throughout his career he was the lead role in over fifty films and a number of television movies as well. In total he appeared in over one hundred films and 150 television programs.
One of his earlier film roles in the science fiction classic "Forbidden Planet" (1956) lead to a long term contract with Metro-Goldwyn Mayer also known as MGM. His career progressed with a number of roles in other such films as "Ransom" (1956), "The Opposite Sex" (1956), "Hot Summer Night" (1957), "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957), "The Naked Gun" which was a film series from 1988-1994, "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972) and "Airplane" (1980).
Some of his more well known television appearances were on such series as, "Justice", "The Virginian", "The Wild Wild West", "The New Breed", "Hawaii Five-O" and also had the lead in the series, "The Bold Ones: The Protectors" (1969).
Nielsen won an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series with his role on, "Police Squad" and six years after the series was cancelled the director decided to make it into a film and called it, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad" in which Nielsen was cast in the same role portraying, Frank Deblin.
This film had two additional sequels, "The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994, both very successful at the box office. His resume continued to grow and he continued to appear in more films trying a variety of genres. Some of his later film work was in, "Surf Ninjas" (1993), "Mr. Magoo" (1997), "Scary Movie 3" (2003) and "Scary Movie 4" (2004).
He also became involved in hosting a series of golf videos during the mid 90's and even they had sequels, "Bad Gold My Way" (1994) and "Stupid Little Golf Video" (1997). As he began to age, he did not allow that to stop him from doing what he loved most.
Some later life appearances were on, "Music Within" (2007), "Am American Carol" (2008) and "Spanish Movie" (2009) which was a spoof comedy similar to, "Scary Movie".
Leslie Nielsen married a total of four times throughout his lifetime. His first wife was Monica Boyer whom he wed in 1950 and divorced seven years later. His second marriage was to Alisande Ullman on September 10th, 1958 and they had two daughters, Maura and Thea, before this marriage too ended in divorce in 1974. His third wife was, Bobbye Brooks Oliver from 1981 through 1984. He then chose to marry for a fourth time to Barbaree Earl Nielsen in 2001 and they remained together until November 28th, 2010 when Nielsen passed away in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from complications from pneumonia.
Nielsen was inducted into the Canada and Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 2002 was named an honorary citizen of West Virginia and an "Ambassador of Mountain State Goodwill". In 2003 he was awarded the ACTRA Award of Excellence from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists.
