KEENAN WYNN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Keenan Wynn was born on July 27th, 1916 in New York City, New York with the birth name Francis Xavier Aloysius James Jeremiah Keenan Wynn. Keenan was born into a family already involved in show business. His father was the great burlesque and also a television buffoon and his mother worked as an actress. He grew up in a very wealthy family and received his education at St. Johns Military Academy.
He began his acting career working with the Lakewood Players in a production of, "Accent of Youth" and soon followed with a role on Broadway in, "Hitch Your Wagon". He soon started also getting steady work for radio jobs. He was able to arrange two screen tests, one with 20th Century Fox and the other with MGM. He was turned down by Fox but was signed with MGM and made his unbilled debut on, "Somewhere I'll Find You" (1942). He followed this role with a couple other character roles in such films as, "For Me and My Gal" (1942), "Lost Angel" (1943), "See Here, Private Hargrove" (1944),"The Clock" (1945), "Without Love" (1945) and "Easy to Wed" (1946).
After the War, Wynn resigned his contract with MGM and continued to work as a character actor. Keenan starred in a number of films such as, "The Hucksters" (1947), "Song of the Thin Man" (1947), "My Dear Secretary" (1948), "Fearless Fagan" (1952) and "Code Two" (1953). In 1954 he decided it was time to move on and end his contract with MGM. He next tried an attempt at working as a television actor. He worked on, "Playhouse 90: Requiem for a Heavyweight" (1956) and earned an Emmy nomination for his guest appearance on, "Police Woman" (1974). Still, even with television work, he continued to work on the big screen in such films as, "The Great Man" (1956) and "Son of Flubber" (1963) both in which he appeared on screen with his father.
Even entering the 60's, Wynn had no shortage of film roles being offered to him. He was cast in, "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964), "The Great Race" (1965), "Viva Max" (1969) and "Pretty Maids All in a Row" (1971).
As he began to get older, he was diagnosed with a very bad case of, tinnitus which causes ringing in the ear and an unable ness to hear exterior sound. He did not let this handicap stop him from doing what he knew and loved best. One of his last roles was on the television series, "The Last Precinct" (1986).
That same year on October 14th, 1986 Keenan Wynn passed away in Los Angeles, California from pancreatic cancer. He was survived by his third wife, Sharley Hudson whom he married in 1954 and remained together having two children, Hilda and Edwynna before he passed away. His first wife also had a third child from a previous relationship. He had married twice before, first to Evie Wynn Johnson in 1938 through 1947 and together having two sons. His second marriage only lasted four years to Betty Jane Butler.
His two sons from his first marriage both grew up to have successful careers. Ned Wynn was an author and Tracy Wynn was a screenwriter. Wynn is interred at Forest Lawn, in Glendale California.
