KATHARINE ROSS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Katharine Ross was born on January 29th, 1940 in Hollywood, California with the birth name Katharine Juliet Ross.  Since her father served for the United States navy, she was raised in various places like most military family's.  The family finally settled in Walnut Creek, near San Francisco and she spent most of her childhood there.

She graduated from Las Lomas High School in 1957 and then attended Diablo Valley College and lived in San Francisco.  She began working in the entertainment industry as an understudy in Actor's Workshop Productions.

Soon she was auditioning and getting cast in a number of television roles.  Most of her roles were westerns such as "Shenandoah" (1965) starring James Stewart, "Games" (1967), "The Graduate" (1967) starring Dustin Hoffman and "Hellfighters" (1968) starring John Wayne.

From this point on, Ross began now getting cast in such films as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford and "Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here" (1969).  She was moving her way up to a level of stardom so quick and had earned a large fan base.  However, then things began to slow down dramatically for her and it took almost six years before she was cast in another film that once again brought her the attention of critics everywhere when she was cast in 1975 in "The Stepford Wives" which was highly successful.

As her career progressed she again lost her level of stardom and most of her other film roles were not as successful such as roles in, "The Betsy" (1978) and back to television with a role on "The Colbys" (1985) which was a prime time soap opera.

Some of her later roles were in 1991 in the television western, "Conagher" and in "Donnie Darko" (2001) portraying a psychiatrist.

Ross had a decent professional career, but her personal life was full of a little more ups an downs as she married a total of five times.  She only had one daughter, Cleo with her fifth husband, Sam Elliott.  Her other marriages were to, Joel Fabiani from 1960 through 1962.  Her second marriage was to John Marion in 1964 through 1967.  She then married a third time to Conrad L. Hall in 1969 through 1974.  Her fourth time to wed was to Gaetano Lisi in 1974 and this marriage was also short lived ending in 1979.

Along with her career as an actress, Ross was also a published children's book writer who wrote, "Little Ballerina" and "My Favorite Things".  She currently resides in Malibu with her husband Sam and her last known work was "Eye of the Dolphin" (2006).
