JOHN RANDOLPH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
John Randolph was born on June 1st, 1915 in New York City, New York with the birth name Emanuel Hirsch Cohen, born to Dorothy and Louis Cohen. His father passed away when he was a young boy and he was raised by his mother and step father. During his teenage years he began to develop an interest in acting and received his early training from Stella Adler.
After high school, Randolph served in the United States Army during World War II and after he completed his military service, Randolph chose to focus on pursuing a full time career as an actor. He began with doing some stage work and became one of the original members of the Actors' Studio.
Some of his early career roles included roles on the television series, "The Clock", "Kraft Theatre", "Treasury Men in Action", "The Web" and "Danger". Along with television work he also appeared on the films, "The Naked City" (1948) starring Barry Fitzgerald, Howard Duff, Dorothy Hart, Ted de Corsia and Don Taylor and "Fourteen Hours" (1951) starring Richard Basehart, Paul Douglas, Barbara Bel Geddes, Agnes Moorehead, Robert Keith, Debra Paget, Howard Da Silva, Jeff Corey, James Millican, Martin Gabel, Frank Faylen and the screen debut of Grace Kelly and Jeffrey Hunter.
Between 1951 and 1960, he and his current wife, actress Sarah Cunningham were both 'blacklisted' due to his outspoken views considered by many to be supportive of communism. Although, he could not find work in film or television, he managed to support his family with continuing to work as a stage actor.
In 1961 he was able to return back to working in Hollywood and began appearing on more television shows such as, "Play of the Week" (1960), "The Defenders" (1964-1965), "For the People" (1965), "The Patty Duke Show" (1965) and "Bonanza" (1968-1972).
Although, he never became a household name, he managed to have a career lasting four decades in the industry. Some of his more well known film roles he added later in his career included, "There Was a Crooked Man..." (1970) starring Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, Warren Oates, Hume Cronyn, Burgess Meredith, Alan Hale Jr., Victor French, Bert Freed, Michael Blodgett, Arthur O'Connell, Lee Grant, C.K. Yang, Ann Doran, Martin Gabel and Gene Evans, as Chief Sidney Green in "Serpico" (1973) starring Al Pacino, "All the President's Men" (1976) starring Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman Jason Robards, Jane Alexander, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Ned Beatty, Meredith Baxter, F. Murray Abraham and Hal Holbrook, "Prizzi's Honor" (1985) starring alongside Jack Nicholson, Kathleen Turner, Robert Loggia, Lawrence Tierney, William Hickey and Anjelica Huston, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) starring Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Diane Ladd, E.G. Marshall, Doris Roberts, Johnny Galecki, William Hickey, Nicholas Guest, Miriam Flynn, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Mae Questel and "You've Got Mail" (1998) starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Dave Chappelle, Jean Stapleton, Steve Zahn, Heather Burns, Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Dabney Coleman.
In addition to television and film, occasionally he would return to stage acting adding such productions to his credits, "The Sound of Music", "Paint Your Wagon", "The Visit" and on Broadway in, "Prelude to a Kiss" and "Broadway Bound". For this role, he won the 1987 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.
Other television credits included, "Matlock", "Seinfeld", "Danger", "The Web", "Mannix", "Kojak", "Medical Center", "Insight", 'Dallas", "M*A*S*H", "Family Ties", "Gun Sky" and "Voyagers" among many others.
His marriage to Sarah Cunningham lasted up until she passed away in 1986. She was survived by their two children and Randolph did not re-marry. On February 24th, 2004, he passed away in Hollywood, California at the age of eighty eight.
