JOHN MILLS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
John Mills was born on February 22nd, 1908 in Norfolk, England with the birth name Lewis Ernest Watts Mills. He was raised in Suffolk. His father worked as a math teacher and his mother was a theater box-office manager.
After earning his high school diploma from Norwich Grammar School for Boys, Mills went on to relocate to London and enrolled at Zelia Raye's Dancing School. He began training as a dancer and then found work as a chorus boy. It did not take long for a scout to take notice of him and he found more work as a stage actor.
By the mid 30's he was appearing on the big screen in such films as, "Midshipmaid Gob" (1932), "The Ghost Camera" (1933), "Born for Glory" (1935), "Car of Dreams" (1935), "Nine Days a Queen" (1936), "You're in the Army Now" (1937), "The Green Cockatoo" (1937),"Goodbye Mr. Chips" (1939), "Which We Serve" (1942), "We Dive at Dawn" (1943), "Waterloo Road" (1945), "Johnny the Clouds" (1945), "Turn of Glory" (1960) and "Oh! What a Lovely War" (1969).
John also added such Broadway stage productions to his resume with roles in, "Ross" (1961-1962) and "Pygmalion" (1987). In 1970 he won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role in the film, "Ryan's Daughter" (1970) and also appeared in the film, "Hamlet" (1996). Along with his film roles he was also a television actor appearing on such series as, "Dundee and the Culhane" (1967) and one of his most well known television roles in, "Quatermass" (1979).
Throughout his career in the industry he appeared in more then 120 films and television movies with some of his latest roles being in such films as, "Bright Young Things" (2003) and "Lights 2" (2005).
Along with working as an actor he had experience as a producer and director. He directed such films as, "Gypsy Girl" (1966) and produced, "The Rocking Horse Winner" and "The History of Mr. Polly".
John received a number of honors throughout his career such as being appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1960 and then in 2002 he received a fellowship of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Mills has married twice throughout his lifetime. His first marriage was at the young age of nineteen to Aileen Raymond from 1927 through 1941. He then married Mary Hayley Bell in 1941 and they had three children together and remained married until he passed away on April 23rd, 2005 in Denham, England after suffering from a chest infection. His remains are buried along with his wife in Denham Churchyard.
