JOHN GILBERT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

John Gilbert was born on July 10th, 1899 in Logan, Utah with the birth name John Cecil Pringle.  John was born into a family already involved in show business.  His father worked as a comic with the Pringle Stock Company. 
 
As he grew up, his father got him involved in the industry at by 1915 he was working as an extra with Thomas H. Ince's company and soon followed this with working as a lead player within two years of being with the company.
 
Along with working as an actor he was also gaining experience working as a screen writer and assistant director.  Soon he was getting small parts in a number of films and those in the industry were beginning to take notice of him.  When Fox films approached him, he was offered a three year contract with them.
 
After earning a great amount of respect in a number of films with Fox Studio's, Gilbert was then approached by MGM studios and he chose to make the career move and sign with them.  John was now getting lead roles.  

Some of his films in the mid 20's were, "His Hour" (1924), "The Big Parade" (1925), "La Boheme" (1926), "Love" (1927), "Flesh and the Devil" (1926) and "A Woman of Affairs" (1928).  His popularity had begun to reach the level of stardom he was after, however as sound films were coming in to the new era, his voice was not so easily adaptable and it was difficult to make the transition.  on top of this, his personal life was being affected due to his alcohol addiction.  

MGM did try to help him make the transition but he was having to portray different types of characters then he was used to and after four more roles in, "Redemption" (1930), "Way for a Sailor" (1930), "Fast Workers" (1933) and his final film role in, "Queen Christina" (1933) his career came to an end.
 
John Gilbert married a total of four times throughout his lifetime.  His first marriage was to Olivia Burwell from 1918 through 1922.  He then married Leatrice Joy on January 4th, 1922 and they had one child together before ending their marriage on May 28th, 1925.  He then chose to marry for a third time to Ina Claire in 1929 and they had no children together before this marriage too ended in 1931.  His fourth and final time to marry was to Virginia Bruce on August 11th, 1932 and they had one child together before this marriage also did not succeed ending on May 25th, 1934.

Two years following his last divorce, Gilbert passed away on January 9th, 1936 in Los Angeles, California after suffering from heart failure.  He is interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.
