JOHN ARCHER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
John Archer was born on may 8th, 1915 in Osceola, Nebraska with the birth name Ralph Bowman, born to Eunice M. (née Crawford) and Joseph E. Bowman. At the age of five, his family relocated to California and after graduating from Hollywood High School he went on to study at the University of Southern California.
His career in entertainment first began working on the other side of the industry studying cinematography at USC, however, he was unable to find employment in this filed so he changed his career direction to focus on acting.
Archer began with finding work as a stage actor appearing at the Ben Bard Playhouse. After gaining some more stage experience he appeared on Broadway in, "The Day Before Spring" and then found work as a film actor working with such studio's as Universal and Republic Pictures.
Archer was awarded a contract with RKO after entering a radio contest for aspiring actors. Some of his early film roles included appearances on, "Flaming Frontiers" (1938) starring Johnny Mack Brown, Eleanor Hansen, Ralph Bowman, Charles Middleton, John Rutherford and Charles Stevens, "Career" (1939) starring Anne Shirley, Leon Errol, Raymond Hatton, Samuel S. Hinds, Charles Drake, Rowena Cook and Edward Ellis, "Curtain Call" (1940) with Barbara Read, Alan Mowbray, Ralph Forbes, Frank Faylen and Helen Vinson and "Scattergood Baines" (1941) starring Guy Kibbee, Carol Hughes, Dink Trout, Emma Dunn and Willie Best.
As his career in the industry progressed he appeared on more prominent features such as, "Guadalcanal Diary" (1943) starring Preston Foster, Lloyd Nolan, William Bendix, Richard Conte, Anthony Quinn, Richard Jaeckel, Ralph Byrd, Minor Watson, Roy Roberts, Lionel Stander and Reed Hadley, "White Heat" (1949) film noir starring James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O'Brien, Margaret Wycherly, Wally Cassell, Ford Rainey, Fred Clark, Paul Guilfoyle and Steve Cochran, "The Big Trees" (1952) starring Kirk Douglas, Edgar Buchanan, Ellen Corby, Alan Hale Jr. and Patrice Wymore, "Sea Tiger" (1952) with Marguerite Chapman, Harry Lauter, Mara Corday and Lyle Talbot, "The Stars are Singing" (1953) starring Rosemary Clooney, Anna Maria Alberghetti and Lauritz Melchior, "Dragon's Gold" (1954) with Hillary Brooke, Philip Van Zandt and Noel Cravat, "No Man's Woman" (1955) co-starring Marie Windsor, Patric Knowles, Nancy Gates, Richard Crane, Louis Jean Heydt and Morris Ankrum, "Rock Around the Clock" (1956) a musical film co-starring Lisa Gaye, Johnny Johnston, Alix Talton and Henry Slate and featured Bill Haley and His Comets along with Alan Freed, The Platters, Tony Martinez and His Band, Freddie Bell and His Bellboys, "She Devil" (1957) with Mari Blanchard, Jack Kelly, Fay Baker and Albert Dekker, "City Of Fear" (1959) co-starring Vince Edwards and Lyle Talbot, "Blue Hawaii" (1961) starring Elvis Presley, Joan Blackman, Angela Lansbury, Howard McNear, Steve Brodie, Hilo Hattie and Roland Winters, "Apache Rifles" (1964) starring Audie Murphy, Michael Dante, Linda Lawson, Ken Lynch, Robert Brubaker and L. In addition to his many film roles he also made quite a name for himself as a television actor appearing on such series as, "The Bob Cummings Show", "Stories of the Century", "Sea Hunt", "The Twilight Zone", "Rescue 8", "The Frank Sinatra Show", "Suspense", "Private Secretary", "The Loretta Young Show", "Zane Grey Theatre", "The Ann Sothern Show", "Maverick", "Bonanza", "Mannix", "Surfside 6", "77 Sunset Strip", "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet", "The Man Dawson", "The Name of the Game", "Ironside", "Columbo", "Bat Masterson", "The Outsider", "Wagon Train" and "Lassie" among many others.
John Archer married twice throughout his lifetime, first to Marjorie Lord in 1941 and they had two children before their marriage ended in divorce in 1953. His second marriage was to Ann Leddy in 1956 and they also had two children together and remained married until he passed away on December 3rd, 1999 in Redmond, Washington after suffering from lung cancer.
