JEAN ROGERS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Jean Rogers was born on March 25th, 1916 in Belmont, Massachusetts with the birth name Eleanor Lovegren. She became a leading lady actress in the early 1930's and 1940's and is most remembered for her role as the girlfriend in the "Flash Gordon" serials which includes "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" and "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars".
Rogers first became involved in the entertainment industry when she won a beauty contest in 1933 and a Hollywood producer approached her and offered her a film contract. She began with working with Warner Brothers for the first year and later switched to signing a contract with Universal.
Some of her early film roles included, "Manhattan Moon" (1935) starring Ricardo Cortez, Dorothy Page, Henry Mollison, Hugh O'Connell Irving Bacon and Regis Toomey, "Stormy" (1935) co-starring Noah Beery Jr. and J. Farrell MacDonald, "Fighting Youth" (1935) starring Charles Farrell, June Martel, Andy Devine and J. Farrell MacDonald, "Don't Get Personal" (1936) starring James Dunn, Sally Eilers, Pinky Tomlin and George Cleveland and "Ace Drummond" (1936) also starring John 'Dusty' King, Noah Beery Jr. and Lon Chaney Jr. It was also during this time period that she was cast in the, "Flash Gordon" serials starring Larry 'Buster' Crabbe and Charles Middleton as Ming the Merciless.
In 1939 she was unhappy with the roles she was being offered while working under contract with Universal and so she therefore chose to sign with 20th Century Fox and appeared in such films as, "Inside Story" (1939) with Michael Whalen, Chick Chandler and Douglas Fowley, "Stop, Look and Love" (1939) starring with William Frawley, Robert Kellard and Eddie Collins and Minna Gombell, "Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence" (1939) co-starring Glenn Ford, Ward Bond, Marjorie Rambeau and Irving Bacon, "Brigham Young" (1940) starring Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, Dean Jagger, Brian Donlevy, John Carradine, Jane Darwell, Ann Todd, Mary Astor and Vincent Price and "The Man Who Wouldn't Talk" (1940) starring with Lloyd Nolan, Richard Clarke and Onslow Stevens.
Again, un-satisfied with the direction her career was heading, she left 20th Century Fox and this time signed on as an actress with MGM. During this time she added such film credits to her resume as, "Dr. Kildare's Victory" (1942) also starring Lew Ayres, Lionel Barrymore and Robert Sterling, "Sunday Punch" (1942) starring alongside Dan Dailey, Guy Kibbee, William Lundigan and J. Carrol Naish, "Pacific Rendezvous" (1942) with Lee Bowman and Mona Maris, "The War Against Mr. Hadley" (1942) starring Edward Arnold, Fay Bainter, Van Johnson, Spring Byington, Halliwell Hobbes, Connie Gilchrist and Stephen McNally and "A Stranger in Town" (1943) starring Frank Morgan, Chill Wills, Irving Bacon, Richard Carlson, Porter Hall and John Hodiak.
Rogers then decided to work as a freelance actress appearing on such films as, "Rough, Tough and Ready" (1945) co-starring Chester Morris and Victor McLaglen, "Gay Blades" (1946) also starring Allan 'Rocky' Lane, Edward Ashley and Frank Albertson, "Hot Cargo" (1946) with William Gargan, Philip Reed and Will Wright, Speed to Spare" (1948) starring with Richard Arlen, Paul Harvey, Roscoe Karns, Monte Blue and Richard Travis, "Fighting Back" (1948) with Paul Langton and Gary Gray and her final film role, "The Second Woman" (1950) starring Robert Young, Betsy Drake, Henry O'Neill and Jason Robards Sr.
Jean Rogers then chose to retire from the industry and chose to focus on her personal life. She married only once to Dan Winkler in 1943 and they remained together until he passed away in 1970. She did not re-marry and on February 24th, 1991, Rogers lost her life at the age of seventy four after complications from surgery in Sherman Oaks, California.
