JAY C. FLIPPEN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Jay C. Flippen was born on March 6th, 1899 in Little Rock, Arkansas.  He began his career in entertainment as a vaudeville performer, and as time progressed he began working on minstrel shows, Broadway productions and radio. 
 
He was first discovered by comedian, Bert Williams during one of his stage performances.  He also established himself as a musician recording over 30 songs between 1924 and 1929 for Columbia, Perfect and Brunswick records.
 
Some film roles he added to his resume throughout his career were roles in, “Winchester '73" (1950) starring James Stewart, "Bend of the River" (1952) starring James Stewart, "Thunder Bay" (1953), “The Wild One" (1954) starring Marlon Brando, "The Far Country" (1954) starring James Stewart, "Strategic Air Command" (1955) also starring James Stewart, "Man Without a Star" (1955) starring Kirk Douglas, "The Restless Breed" (1957), "Night Passage" (1957,  "Firecreek" (1968) starring Henry Fonda, and “Hellfighters” (1968) starring John Wayne.
 
Whether he was on film or television he managed to vary the type of character he portrayed to avoid being completely type cast.  He would be seen as a prisoner, warden, military personal to a farmer and even a bartender.
 
He added a number of television roles to his resume as well such as the series, “Gunsmoke”, “The Virginian”, “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “Bonanza”, “The Rounders”, “The Road West”, “Climax”,
“Route 66” and “Ironside” among many others.
 
Later in life he became quite ill and had to live the remainder of his life in a wheelchair after having one leg amputated in the late 60’s due to diabetes.  He passed away on February 3rd, 1971 in Los Angeles, California after suffering from an aneurism.  He was survived by his wife of twenty five years, Ruth Brooks Flippen.  His remains were entombed at Westwood Memorial Park in Westwood, California.
