JASON ROBARDS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Jason Robards was born on July 26th, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois with the birth name Jason Nelson Robards Jr. His father was stage and film star, Jason Robards Sr. and even though Robards was born in Chicago, he was raised by his family in Los Angeles, California.
He attended Hollywood High School and was very involved in athletics during his school years. He briefly served his country in the US Navy during World War II and upon his completion he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and found work as a stage actor.
He also found part time small 'gigs' in radio and television before finally making a name for himself on the New York Stage circuit in the production of, "The Iceman Cometh" portraying the character, Hickey. This was followed by another O'Neil production in the play, "Long Day's Journey Into Night".
Robards soon entered the film industry working on a feature film called, "The Journey" (1959) and his career was soon on it's way to stardom. He followed with some major film roles such as, "All the Presidents Men" (1976) and "Julia" (1977) for which he won consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor.
Alongside a successful film career, Robards never left stage acting completely. He continued to work on O'Neil productions such as, "Moon for the Misbegotten" and "Hughie". He also had a decent television acting career, winning an Emmy in 1988 for, "Inherit the Wind".
Robards married four times throughout his life. First to Eleanor Pittman from 1948 through 1958 having three children. His second marriage was to Rachel Taylor from 1959 through 1961. He then married for a third time to Lauren Bacall from 1961 through 1969 and had another child. His fourth and final marriage was to Lois O'Connor from 1970 through the year 2000 when he passed away from lung cancer on December 26th, 2000 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Robards won Broadway's 1959 Tony Award as best actor (dramatic) for, "The Disenchanted" and was nominated a total of seven other times as best supporting or featured actor. Robards was also a recipient of the 22nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime contribution to arts and culture in 1999. He was also awarded the American National Medal of the Arts in 1997 by the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington, DC.
