James Drury was born on April 18th, 1934 in New York City, New York with the birth name James Child Drury.  His father was a New York University professor of marketing.  Drury spent most of his later childhood being raised on a ranch in Oregon.
After completing High School he trained as a classical actor at New York University and soon decided to relocate to Los Angeles, California and try his luck at a career in the industry.
He began acting in the early 60's with small parts on a number of films for Walt Disney, but soon was cast in the western "Ride the High Country" (1962) and his career began to take off.  He was soon cast in the television series "The Virginian" which aired for a total of nine seasons from 1962 through 1971 and is by far his most well known role.  This role was later reprised in the year 2000 as a television movie and he had a cameo role.
Along with earning stardom from this series, Drury did appear on a number of other films and television shows such as "The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw", "Gunsmoke" (1955-1961), "Wagon Train" (1960-1962), "The Red Skelton Hour" (1971) and his last appearance was in 2005 on the film "Hell to Pay".
He has been married three times, first to Cristall Orton from 1957 through 1964, he then married Phyllis Mitchell in 1968 and they were together through 1979.  He is currently married to Carl Ann and has one son, Tim Drury, who became a member of the band "The Eagles" and later joined the British rock group, "Whitesnake".
In 1991 he was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.  Along with having a career as an actor, Drury was also involved in the oil and natural gas business in Texas.
