JAMES CAAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
James Caan was born on March 26th, 1940 in The Bronx, New York with the birth name Jimmy Edmund Caan. His father was employed as a butcher. When he completed High School he attended Michigan State and studied economics. He also excelled in athletics such as football, holding a black belt in karate and even was a regular on the rodeo circuit.
When he went to school at Hofstra University to study he first became interested in acting and after being interviewed for Sanford Meisner's Neighborhood Playhouse and being accepted he left school and headed in a whole new career path. Soon he was awarded a scholarship to study acting with acting coach, Wynn Handman and first started to work as a stage actor.
After a couple off Broadway experiences under his belt he made his screen debut in, "Irma la Douce" (1963) which followed with roles in such films as, "Red Line 7000" (1965), "El Dorado" (1966), "Journey to Shiloh" (1968) and "The Rain People" (1969). When he was cast in the film, "Brian's Song" (1971) which was a made for television movie, he gained so many fans with his heart felt performance as a cancer-stricken Chicago Bears running back, Brian Piccolo.
He had built quite a strong resume and continued to get cast in a number of 'A' rated films such as, "The Godfather" (1972) for which he earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination and repeated the same role in, "The Godfather: Part II" (1974). He paired with Barbara Streisand in the film, "Funny Lady" (1975) and worked on films such as, "Rollerball" and "The Killer Elite" (both 1975).
During the late 70's and early 80's he was not getting cast in roles he was used to and the films he worked on were turning out to be highly unsuccessful such as in the western, "Comes a Horseman" (1978) and "Thief" (1981).
For a while, Caan was not seen on the Big Screen but returned with a huge comeback when he was cast in the film, "Gardens of Stone" (1987). Fans and critics were following his every move again and he began working on such hit films as, "Alien nation" (1988) and "Dick Tracy" (1990). He also worked alongside Arnold Schwarzenagger in, "Eraser" (1996), "City of Ghosts" (2002) and he is also a regular on the successful television show, "Las Vegas" (2003).
Today, Caan continues to work in the industry and gain new fans every time he appears on the big screen. He has a couple projects in post and pre production such as, "Sweetwater" (2011) and "Redemption" (2011).
Caan has had a very successful career for the most part, however, his personal life has had quite a few ups and downs. In 1990 he finally quit what was a twenty year addiction to cocaine.
He currently resides in Beverly Hills, California and is in the process of filing for divorce from his fourth wife, Lida Stokes whom he has been married to since 1995 and they have two children together. Prior to this marriage he wed three other times. First to Dee Jay Mathis in 1960 through 1966 and having one child. His second marriage was to Sheila Ryan from 1976 to 1977 and they also had one child. His third marriage was in 1990 to Ingrid Hajek and they also had one child before this marriage too ended in a divorce in 1995.
