JACK LORD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Jack Lord was born on December 30th, 1920 in New York City, New York with the birth name John Joseph Patrick Ryan. His father, William Lawrence Ryan was a steamship executive and his mother had a fruit farm where he learned all about horses. He had one older brother, two younger brothers and a younger sister. He became interested in art when he spent the summers at sea in the merchant Marines and would sketch pictures of landscapes he would visit.
He received his formal education in New York City where he graduated from John Adams High School and Trumbull Naval Academy in New London, Connecticut. He then earned a football scholarship to New York University and earned a degree in fine arts. He then went on to study acting at the Actors Studio as well as the Playhouse in New York.
He took a brief break from his studies to join the Merchant Navy during World War II and would make maritime training films. Upon completing his military service he began really pursuing a career as a stage actor making numerous Broadway appearances in such productions as, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Traveling Lady".
When Lord decided to relocate to Los Angeles California and try and work in the film industry he was cast in "Project X" (1949) followed by a number of other film and television roles until he got his most well known role in "Court Martial of Billy Mitchell" (1955) with co star Gary Cooper. He is also most remembered for his role on the television series "Hawaii Five-O" (1968) which he not only starred in but also directed a number of episodes.
Along with being a successful actor, he was also an established artist and two of his paintings were displayed at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as the British Museum of modern Art. He was also a vocal advocate of gun control.
Lord married twice throughout his lifetime, first to Ann Cecily Willard in 1944 and they had one child together before divorcing in 1947. He then married for a second time to Marie De Narde in 1949 and they remained married until he passed away on January 21st, 1998 after suffering from congestive heart failure in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had only seen his son once when he was just a baby and then at the age of thirteen his son was killed in an accident.
