IDA LUPINO BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Ida Lupino was born on February 4th, 1918 in Camberwell, London, England in the United Kingdom to parents, Stanley and Connie O'Shea. Her parents were very involved in show business and she was encouraged as a young girl to pursue a career as an actress.
She trained at RADA and her first film appearance was in, "The Love Race" (1931). She continued to work in films in England appearing in minor roles.
In 1933, her family immigrated to New York from England and ironically, in 1933, when her mother, Connie O'Shea, took her daughter along for an audition, it was her daughter, Ida who actually was cast in the role. She also had a younger sister, Rita Lupino who also grew took on a career as an actress and dancer.
Lupino's film career really took off when she appeared in the film, "The Light That Failed" (1939) and by the mid 1940's she was getting roles offered to her from all directions. Some of the films she appeared in were, "The Drive By Night" (1940), "High Sierra" (1941) starring Humphrey Bogart and "The Hard Way" (1943) for which she won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.
In 1947, Lupino left her contract with Warner Brothers and decided to work as a freelance actress. Some films during this time period were, "Road House" (1948) and "On Dangerous Ground" (1952). During this period she also became involved in directing making her first project, "Not Wanted" (1949) only by chance when another director, Elmer Clifton suffered a minor heart attack and could not finish directing the film.
A variety of films followed and many dealt with current social issues such as her film, "Outrage" (1950) which was based around the subject of rape. She was also the first woman to direct a film noir, "The Hitch-Hiker" (1953).
As her career progressed through the next three decades she continued to work as an actress and director and her main focus was in the television industry. Some of her directing projects were, "The Donna Reed Show", "Batman", "Sam Benedict", "The Untouchables" and "The Virginian" to name just a few. She was also not the only woman to direct an episode of, "The Twilight Zone' but she was also the only person to star in an episode and direct it as well.
Ida Lupino was married three times troughout her lifetime. First to Louis Hayward who was also an actor from November 1938 through May 1945. She then married her second husband, Collier Young who worked as a producer in the industry and they were married for three years from 1948 to 1951. Her third and final marriage was to Howard Duff, another actor from October 1951 through 1984 and the couple had her only biological child, Bridget Duff Born in 1952.
On August 3rd, 1995, Ida Lupino passsed away from a stroke at the age of seventy seven in Los Angeles, california while undergoing treatment for colon cancer. She is burried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
Ida Lupino became known throughout her lifetime as a pioneer for women filmmakers. She was not only a talented actress but was also known as a very talented director within the industry. Throughout her forty eight years working in the entertainment industry, Lupino appeared in fifty nine films and directed nine others. She also had an amazing television career appearing on fifty eight programs, directed fifty other television episodes and even worked as a writer for five different films and four television episodes.
Lupino was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to the Television and Motion Picture Industry. Lupino was also the second woman to ever be admitted to the Director's Guild .
