HENRY HULL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Henry Hull was born on October 3rd, 1890 in Louisville, Kentucky with the middle name Watterson, born to William Madison Hull and Elinor Bond Vaughn. In 1902, his family relocated to New York City. After high school, he planned on pursuing a career as an engineer, and studied at Cooper Union and Columbia University, however prior to turning twenty one, he changed his career goals and began working as a stage actor.
His Broadway debut was in, "Green Stockings" (1911). Soon he was adding other Broadway credits to his resume such as, "Believe Me Xantippe" (1913), "The Man Who Came Back" (1916), "Manhattan" (1922) and his most famous Broadway role was in, "Tobacco Road" (1933) which ran for 3182 performances, although, Hull did not play the entire run.
Throughout his career in the industry, he would add over seventy films to his credits. Some of his early career roles were on, "The Black Monk" (1917) and "Little Women" (1918).
Some of his more famous roles were in, "Werewolf of London" (1935), "Jesse James" (1939) starring Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda and Gene Tierney, "Great Expectations" (1934), "Miracles for Sale" (1939), "Boys Town" (1938) starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, "Lifeboat" (1944) co-starring Hume Cronyn, Mary Anderson, Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, Walter Slezak, John Hodiak, Heather Angel and Canada Lee, "The Return of Jesse James" (1950), "Inferno" (1953) starring Robert Ryan, Rhonda Fleming, William Lundigan and Carl Betz, "Man With the Gun" (1955) and his final film role was in 1966 on, "The Chase".
In addition to film he also appeared on a variety of television series such as, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "The Restless Gun", "Wagon Train", "Route 66", "Naked City", "Star Tonight", "Climax!", "Danger", "Meet Mr. McNutley", "Bonanza" and "The Outlaws".
Henry Hull married only once to Juliet van Wyck Fremont in 1913 and they had three children together and remained married until she passed away in 1971. For thirty years of his marriage, he resided on a farm in Connecticut. After losing his wife, Hull relocated to England with his daughter and seven years later, Hull passed away on March 8th, 1977 in Cornwall, England after suffering a stroke. His remains are interred in the Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill, New York.
