HARRY CAREY JR. BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Harry Carey Jr., was born on May 16th, 1921 in Saugus, California, with the birth name Henry George Carey Jr. His parents were both in the entertainment industry. His father, Henry Carey was a well known silent film actor and his mother was actress, Olivia Carey.
His family raised him north of Los Angeles on a 1000 acre ranch and during World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon completing his military duty, Jr's father, introduced him to famous director John Ford who cast Jr. in a number of war propaganda Navy films.
Although, Carey Jr. was raised in a family highly involved in acting, he had always wanted to pursue a career in music. However, after working with Ford and trying to find other work as a singer, Carey realized his talent as well as family connections were in acting.
Over the course of his career he would appear in over 100 films, many which were Western roles. His early career roles included appearances on, "Rolling Home" ( 1946), "Pursued" (1947) and "Red River" (1948) alongside his own father as well as famous western star, John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, John Ireland, Noah Beery Jr. and Walter Brennan.
He later became a regular in the John Ford Stock Company. Other well known films he added to his credits included, "3 Godfathers" (1948) with John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz, Ward Bond just to name a few, "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949) co-starring Maureen O'Hara, Ben Johnson and many more, "Wagon Master" (1950), "Rio Grande" (1950), "The Long Gray Line" (1955), "Mister Roberts" (1955), "The Searchers" (1956) in John Wayne's greates western along with Jeffrey Hunter, Natalie Wood, Henry Brandon, John Qualen, Ward Bondand William Coy , "Two Rode Together" (1961) with Richard Widmark, James Stewart, Shirley Jones, John McIntire and Sal Mineo, and "Cheyenne Autumn (1964) co-starring Gilbert Roland, Ricardo Montalban, Karl Malden and a host of other great stars.
Along with film work he was also cast as a regular on the television series, "Spin and Marty" which aired on Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Club between 1955 and 1957. Other television credits included, "The Legend of Jesse James", "Have Gun - Will Travel", "Wagon Train", "Gray Ghost", "Tombstone Territory", "The Rounders", "Racket Squad", "Lassie", "The Rifleman", "Bonanza" and "Whispering Smith".
As his career progressed, he continued to alternate between film and television work with roles in some other well known films such as, "Gremlins" (1984), "Mask" (1985), "Whales of August" (1987), "Cherry 2000" (1987), "Back to the Future Part III" (1990), "Tombstone" (1993) starring alongside Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott and Powers Boothe, and "The Sunchaser" (1996).
In 2001, a documentary was released, "Dobe And a Company of Heroes" which documented Carey's life. Along with working as an actor, later in 1994, he published a book titled, "Company of Heroes: My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company". Also, in 2005 a DVD version of, "The Adventures of Spin and Marty" was released with part of the Walt Disney Treasures series.
Towards the end of his career in entertainment, he switched from acting to working on the other side of the camera as a producer. He was involved in such projects as the television movie, "Horse Tales" (2007), the documentaries, "Harry Carey Jr. Hosts John Wayne Meets Lucy" (2009), "Trader Horn: The Journey Back" and the shorts, "Harey Carey Jr's Tribute to John Wayne Producer" (2010) and "Harry Caret Jr. Hosts Tales from the Set" (2010).
He received a number of honors during his career, such as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 1987, Golden Boot award by the Motion Picture & Television Fund Foundation.
He married only once to Marilyn Fix, daughter of actor Paul Fix, in 1944 and together they had four children. On December 28th, 2012 he passed away from natural causes in Santa Barbara, California at the age of ninety one.
