GUINN 'BIG BOY' WILLIAMS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams was born on April 26th, 1899 in Decatur, Texas with the birth name Guinn Terell Williams Jr. His father worked as a rancher and later became a politician working as a member of the Texas Senate and a US Representative to Congress circa 1920's-1930's. Williams grew up playing semi pro and pro baseball and was given the nickname, 'Big Boy' early on and at 6'2 tall he earned it.
Williams father had been an officer in the military and wanted his son to follow in his footsteps and attend West Point, however, William's had developed an interest in acting and wanting to take his life and career path a different direction.
In 1919, Guinn Williams chose to move to Hollywood and see if he had a chance at building a career as an actor. Since he had experience working on a ranch as a cowboy and rodeo rider, it was easy to find work first as a stuntman. He became friends with actor Will Rogers and together the men worked on about fifteen films together. Williams screen debut was with Rogers in, "Almost a Husband" (1919) and this role followed with many successful film roles appearing in mostly westerns.
Williams starred in his own series of silent Westerns and had no problems with the transition to talkies later on in his career. He also worked on, "Lucky Star" (1929) with Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell.
He starred in the film, "The Great Meadow" (1931) alongside Johnny Mack Brown. Williams did many films that were not westerns such as, "A Star is Born" (1937) and "The Glass Key" (1935).
Some of the more memorable roles that happened to be in westerns were on, "Dodge City" (1939) and "Santa Fe Trail" (1940) both starring Errol Flynn when he was working with Warner Brothers. Also, Universal Pictures chose to cast him in their large serial, "Riders of Death Valley" (1941).
Even though Williams was never cast in the lead in the majority of the films he worked on, he always was getting supporting roles and was constantly staying employed and working in the industry. Even into the late 50's and early 60's, William worked on such films as, "The Alamo" (1960) and "The Comancheros" (1961) with John Wayne which was his last role on screen.
Throughout his lifetime he married three times and all to actresses. His first marriage was to Kathleen Collins followed by marrying Barbara Weeks. His final wife whom he met in the 1940's and married in January was Dorothy Peterson and they remained together until Williams passed away. They had one son together, William Tyler.
Even though his career was still successful, as he entered the 60's, his health was slowly beginning to deteriorate. Guinn Williams passed away on June 6th, 1962 in Burbank, California from Uremic poisoning.
