FREDDIE BARTHOLOMEW BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Freddie Bartholomew was born on March 28th, 1924 in Dublin, Ireland with the birth name Frederick Llewellyn March.  He was raised in England by his aunt after his parents both abandoned him.  He became a very successful child actor.

His first introduction to the industry was on a vacation with his aunt to the United States when he had the chance to appear in two British films that were filmed in America after film producer, David O. Selznick spotted him.  From this exposure, he was offered the lead role from MGM in, "The Personal History, Adventures, Experience, & Observation of David Copperfield the Younger (1935).  His success from this film came overnight and he begin to get roles in a number of classic films such as, "Anna Karenina" (1935), "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (1936) and "Captains Courageous" (1937).

He was now America's 2nd highest paid child actor right behind Shirley Temple.  Due to his financial success, his birth mother tried to regain access into his life hoping to access some of his financial savings as well.  Sadly as he began to grow into a man, his young boyish looks began to dissipate and film career slowly began to dwindle away.  He found some work in television but for the most part his acting career had come to an end.

In 1944 he was drafted into the United States Air Force and was employed as an aircraft mechanic.  After suffering a fall, he was discharged in 1945.  Bartholomew found work for an advertising agency and sadly was not financially secure any longer due to a legal court battle he had to deal with draining most of his funds earned from acting as a child.

He did also find some work as a producer in 1950 of a variety of television soap Operas such as, "As the World Turns".  When he regained financial stability he married his third wife and had a total of three children.

On January 23rd, 1992 he passed away in Sarasota, Florida from emphysema and heart failure at the age of sixty seven.  Freddie was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry.
