FLORA ROBSON BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Flora Robson was born on March 28th, 1902 in South Shields, England with the birth name Flora McKenzie Robson. The first time she acted in front of an audience was at the age of five, although at that time she was not sold on becoming an actress.
After graduating from Palmer's Green High School, she enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and later began performing in various stage productions. With the encouragement of a friend she joined the Cambridge Festival Theatre and soon was adding such stage credits as, "The Anatomist", "Macbeth" and "The Importance of Being Earnest".
By the mid 30's she began to break into the film industry adding such credits as, "A Gentleman of Paris" (1931) with Hugh Williams, Sybil Thorndike and Phyllis Konstam, "The Rise of Catherine the Great" (1934) starring Elisabeth Bergner, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Dorothy Hale, "I, Claudius" (1937) starring with Charles Laughton, Merle Oberon and Emlyn Williams, "Fire Over England" (1937) co-starring Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Banks, Raymond Massey, James Mason and Robert Newton, "Smith" (1939) with Ralph Richardson and Allan Jeayes, "Wuthering Heights" (1939) starring Merle Oberon, David Niven, Laurence Olivier, Hugh Williams, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Cecil Kellaway, Miles Mander, Leo G. Carroll and Donald Crisp, "The Sea Hawk" (1940) co-starring Errol Flynn, Brenda Marshall, Claude Rains, Donald Crisp, David Bruce, Alan Hale Sr., Montague Love, Halliwell Hobbes, Robert Warwick, William Lundigan, James Stephenson and Gilbert Roland, "Caesar and Cleopatra" (1945) starring Vivien Leigh, Stewart Granger, Stanley Holloway, Cecil Parker, Claude Rains, Michael Rennie and Jean Simmons, "Saratoga Trunk" (1945) also starring Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman and Florence Bates and "Black Narcissus" (1947) starring Deborah Kerr, Sabu Dastagir, David Farrar, Esmond Knight, Jean Simmons and Kathleen Byron.
She continued appearing on stage and even added such television credits as, "Afternoon Film Festival", "Armchair Theatre", "The Human Jungle", "BBC Play of the Month", "Heidi", "A Legacy", "Oresteia" and her final television appearance in, "An invitation to Remember" (1990).
Flora Robson never married nor did she ever have any children. After retiring from the industry she passed away on July 7th, 1984 in Brighton, England after suffering from cancer.
