EVERETT SLOANE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Everett Sloane was born on October 1st, 1909 in New York City, New York. He is most well known for his role portraying Mr. Bernstein in the film, "Citizen Kane" (1941) starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead, Ray Collins, Paul Stewart and Philip Van Zandt. His acting career began when he was a child performing on the stage at the age of seven.
Upon earning his high school diploma, Sloane went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania, however prior to earning his college degree he chose to leave school early and begin his pursuit of a career as an actor.
He briefly worked with a theatrical stock company but soon chose to move back to New York City and supported himself by finding work as a runner on Wall Street. Sloane then decided to pursue acting again, this time finding work as a radio announcer and received great reviews as the voice of Adolf Hitler on, "The March of Dimes" serials and "Inner Sanctum Mysteries" radio show in the 1940's.
Sloane then made another try at stage performing and debuted on Broadway I 1935 in, "Boy Meets Girl". Other stage credits early on in his career included roles in the productions, "All That Glitters", "Native's Son" , "S Bell for Adano", "Room Service" and "The Dancer".
Soon he began adding a number of feature film roles to his resume such as, "The Lady from Shanghai" (1947) co-starring Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles and Ted de Corsia, "Prince of Foxes" (1949) also starring Tyrone Power, Orson Welles and Wanda Hendrix, "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956) starring Paul Newman, Pier Angeli, Eileen Heckart, Sal Mineo, Steve McQueen, Ray Stricklyn and Robert Loggia, "Bird of Paradise" (1951) starring with Louis Jourdan, Debra Paget, Jeff Chandler and Jack Elam, "Lust for Life" (1956) starring alongside Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn, "The Best of the Post" (1960) starring John Conte, Karl Swenson and Alan Lee, "The Asphalt Jungle" (1961) starring Sterling Hayden, Jean Hagen, Sam Jaffe, Louis Calhern, James Whitmore and Marilyn Monroe and "Ready for the People" (1964) starring with Simon Oakland, Anne Helm Richard Jordan.
In addition to his film work he was quite well known for his television appearances adding such credits as, "Lights Out", "Suspense", "Zane Grey Theatre", "Petticoat Junction", "Wagon Train", "Pond's Theater", "Checkmate", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "The Joseph Cotten Show", "Patterns", "Twilight Zone", "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", Walt Disney's "Zorro", "Climax!", "Wanted Dead or Alive" starring Steve McQueen, "Playhouse 90" "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Loretta Young Show".
He also did voice over work for the animated cartoon series, "The Dick Tracy Show" (1961) and "The Adventures of Jonny Quest" (1964).
At the age of fifty five he decided to quit acting as he had become discouraged with the direction his career was heading. He took his own life by barbiturate poisoning on August 6th, 1965 in Los Angeles, California. He only married once in 1933 to Lillian Herman and they had two children and remained married until he committed suicide. His remains are buried at Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
