EMIL JANNINGS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Emil Jannings was born on July 23rd, 1884 in Rorschach, Switzerland with the birth name Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz.  His mother was German and his father was American.  The family relocated to Germany when he was a boy and his career in acting began as a stage actor and soon he was working under Max Reinhardt's company.
 
Soon he transitioned over to the film industry appearing in such films as, "Madame DuBarry" (1919), "Othello" (1922), "The Last Laugh" (1924), "Herr Rartuff" (1925), "Quo Vadis?" (1925), "Jealousy" (1925) and "Faust" (1926).  He then began also appearing in a number of Hollywood films such as, "The Last Command" (1928) co-starring Evelyn Brent and William Powell, for which he received an Academy award making him the first male leading actor to receive this award.  Emil also won an Oscar for, "The Way of All Flesh" (1929).
 
Other film roles that followed were, "Betrayal" (1929) and filmed in Europe, but in English, "The Blue Angel" (1930).  Once the transition from silent film's to talkies occurred in Hollywood, his film career in the United States came to an end.  He returned back to Europe and continued to work as an actor but focused his acting skills to the Nazi regime.  A number of his films were meant to promote Nazism such as, "The Youth of Frederick the Great" (1935), "The Ruler" (1937), "Uncle Kriger" (1941) and "The Dismissal of Bismarck" (1942).
 
After World War II came to an end, Jannings did a couple more films, but he never quite reached the level of stardom that he was well on his way to earlier in his career.  He retired in Austria and took on Austrian citizenship.  
 
Jannings was married a total of four times throughout his lifetime and had only one child.  He passed away on January 2nd, 1950 in Strobl, Austria after suffering from cancer.
