ELLEN CORBY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
 
Ellen Corby was born on June 3rd, 1911 in Racine, Wisconsin with the birth name Ellen Hansen.  She was raised in Philadelphia and in the 1930's, Corby decided to relocate to Hollywood in pursuit of a career as an actress.
 
She found work as a script assistant for twelve years and took acting lessons, before she was even given the chance to break into the industry.  When she was finally given the chance to appear on films, they were very small un-credited roles.  She worked on twenty five films receiving no credit before she finally was persistent and was cast in, "I Remember Mama" (1948) a role for which she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress Emmy.
 
Finally, her career began to take off appearing in more prominent films such as, "Shane" (1953) starring Alan Ladd and Van Heflin, "Sabrina" (1954) starring Audrey Hepburn and William Holden, "Vertigo" (1958) starring James Stewart, "Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town" (1950) and "The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters" (1954).  She was becoming a favorite in Western films and also had a recurring role on the television series, "Trackdown" (1957-1959) starring Robert Culp.
 
Along with now working as a film actress, Corby was also seen on a number of television series such as, "Wagon Train", "Bonanza", "Fury", "I Love Lucy", "Get Smart", "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Waltons" (1971), playing Grandma Walton, a role which earned her Emmy Awards in 1973, 1974 and 1975.  Some of her more recent appearances were on such television movies as, "The Waltons: A Decade of the Waltons" (1980), "All the Way Home" (1981), "A Day for Thanks on Walton's Mountain" (1982), "A Walton Wedding" (1995) and "A Walton Easter" (1997). 
 
Ellen Corby married only once to Francis Corby from 1934 through 1944.  She never re-married nor did she have any children of her own.  She passed away from natural causes at the age of eighty seven on April 14th, 1999 at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.  Her mausoleum is in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
