ELIZABETH ASHLEY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Elizabeth Ashley was born on August 30th, 1939 in Ocala, Florida with he birth name Elizabeth Ann Cole, born to Arthur Kingman and Lucille Cole. After high school her family relocated to Louisiana and Ashley earned her college degree from Louisiana State University.
Ashley then chose to focus full time on a career as an actress and chose to relocate to New York City. Soon she was appearing on and off Broadway in such productions as, "Dirty Hands", "Camino Real", "The Highest Tree", "Roman Candle", "Mary, Mary", "Take Her, She's Mine" and "Barefoot in the Park", where she received a Tony nomination for Best Actress.
Now with quite a bit of stage experience under her belt she began to embark on a film career and soon was adding such credits as, "The Carpetbaggers" (1964) starring alongside George Peppard, Alan Ladd, Carroll Baker, Robert Cummings, Martha Hyer, Lew Ayres, Ralph Taeger, Leif Erickson, Arthur Franz, Martin Balsam, Tom Tully, Vaughn Taylor, Archie Moore and Audrey Trotter, "Ship of Fools" (1965) also starring Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, Jose Ferrer, Lee Marvin, Oskar Werner, Michael Dunn, George Segal, Jose Greco and Heinz Rühmann, "The Third Day" (1965) co-starring George Peppard, Roddy McDowall, Arthur O'Connell, Herbert Marshall, Mona Washbourne, Robert Webber, Charles Drake, Arte Johnson and Sally Kellerman, "Rancho Deluxe" (1975) starring with Jeff Bridges, Sam Waterston, Slim Pickens, Clifton James, Charlene Dallas and Harry Dean Stanton, "Coma" (1978) co-starring Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas, Richard Widmark, Rip Torn, Tom Selleck, Lois Chiles, Hari Rhodes and Ed Harris and "Windows" (1980) starring Talia Shire, Joseph Cortese, Kay Medford and Russell Horton.
She has maintained her love for performing live on stage and continues to add such credits as, "Maggie the Cat", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "The Skin of Our Teeth", "Caesar and Cleopatra", "Vanities", "Agnes of God", "Suddenly Last Summer", "Sweet Bird of Youth", "The Glass Menagerie" and "The Red Devil Battery Sign" among many others.
Not only was she a well know film and stage actress, she also made her mark as a television actress appearing on the series, "Another World", "All My Children", "Evening Shade", "Law and Order", "Burke's Law", "Murder, She Wrote", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Caroline in the City" and her most recent television series role on, "Treme".
Elizabeth Ashley married actor, James Farentino in 1962 however this marriage came to an end just three years later. She then married actor George Peppard in 1966 and they had one son together before this marriage came to an end in 1972. Her third marriage, also unsuccessful was in 1975 to James McCarthy and again by 1981 this marriage ended.
Along with her career as an actress she was also a founding member of the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute and has served as President for the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Awards.
