Efrem Zimbalist Jr. ACTOR

Efrem Zimbalist Jr was born on November 30th, 1918 in New York City, New York into a family already very much involved in show business.  His father, Efrem Zimbalist Sr. was a concert violinist and his mother, Alma Gluck was an opera singer.  He grew up in a very financially stable family and went on to study at both the Yale School of Drama and the Neighborhood Playhouse.

After he served in the military he went on to get his first role on Broadway thanks to the help of a family friend, Garson Kanin.  His debut role was in the play, "The Rugged Path" (1945) followed by joining the American Repertory Theatre  performing in such productions as, "Henry VIII" and "Androcles and the Lion".  He then decided to see if he could be successful working as a stage producer.  He brought opera to Broadway with the production, "The Medium" and "The Telephone".  He also produced the musical, "The Consul" in which he won the New York Drama Critics Award and the Pultzer Prize for Best Musical in 1950.

After he had his film debut in, "House of Strangers" (1949) starring Edward G. Robinson, Susan Hayward, Richard Conte, Debra Paget and Hope Emerson, his career came to a halt when he lost his current wife and mother to his two children due to cancer.  He decided to put his acting career on hold and found work as the director and researcher at the Cutis School of Music.
In 1954 Zimbalist decided to return to his love of acting and was cast as the lead in a daytime soap opera called "Concerning Miss. Marlowe".  He soon was able to get a contract with Warner Brothers and was cast in a number of films such as, "Band of Angels" (1957) starring alongside Clark Gable, Yvonne De Carlo, Sidney Poitier, Rex Reason Patric Knowles, Ray Teal, Raymond Bailey and William Schallert, "Too Much, Too Soon" (1958) co-starring Errol Flynn, Dorothy Malone, Ray Danton, Martin Milner, Neva Patterson, Ed Kemmer and Murray Hamilton, "A Fever in the Blood" (1961) co-starring Angie Dickinson, Jack Kelly, Don Ameche, Ray Danton, Rhodes Reason, Parley Baer, Carroll O'Connor (in his film debut) and Robert Colbert and "Wait Until Dark" (1967) starring Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna and Jack Weston and the classic disaster film "Airport 1975" (1974) with an all str cast of Charlton Heston, Karen Black, George Kennedy, Susan Clark, Gloria Swanson, Guy Stockwell, Martha Scott, Roy Thinnes, Dana Andrews, Sid Caesar, Linda Blair, Helen Reddy, Norman Fell, Myrna Loy, Beverly Garland, Eric Estrada and Ed Nelson.
With now a decent film career underway, he decided to see if he could be as successful an actor in television.  Efrem portrayed a private investigator in the show, "77 Sunset Strip" (1958-1964) for 206 episodes and also starring Roger Smith, Edd Byrnes, Richard Long, Louis Quinn, Robert Logan and Jacqueline Beer and on, "The F.B.I." (1965-1973) for 241 episodes and co-starring William Reynolds and Philip Abbott which was his ultimate claim to fame.

He was a good hearted man on stage and off and he managed to make his career last six decades.  He even worked on the film, "Hot Shots!" (1991) starring Charlie Sheen, Lloyd Bridges, Jon Cryer, Bill Irwin, Kristy Swanson, Kevin Dunn and Cary Elwes and did a number of voiceovers in various cartoons.

He also appeared in numerous television series including "The United States Steel Hour", Maverick", "Sugarfoot", "Hawaiian Eye", "Bronco", "Rawhide", "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour", "Fantasy Island", "The Love Boat", "Hotel", "Hardcastle and McCormick", "Hunter", "Murder, She Wrote", "Zorro", "Burke's Law", "The Nanny" and "Remington Steele" starring his daughter Stephanie Zimbalist and Pierce Brosnan.
Efrem resided in Santa Barbara, California with his second wife, Stephanie Spaulding whom he married in 1956.  They have one daughter together, Stephanie Zimbalist, also a credible actress in her own right who was a regular on the TV Classic "The Streets of San Francisco" starring alongside of Karl Malden and Michael Douglas, and he has two other children, Nancy and Efrem 'Skip' from his first wife, Emily McNair whom passed away in 1950 from cancer.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr. passed away from natural causes at age 95 on Friday May 2, 2014 at his home in Solvang, California with his daughter and son at his side.
