EDWARD EVERETT HORTON BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Edward Everett Horton was born on March 18th, 1886 in Brooklyn, New York to parents Edward Horton Sr. and Isabella Diack. He was the oldest of four children. After High School, he studied at both Polytechnic Institute and at Columbia and became involved in the school productions. It was this introduction that turned his sights on pursuing a career as an actor.
He began working as a stage actor making his stage debut in 1906. In 1907, he joined a Gilbert and Sullivan company on Staten Island and worked on several shows. He followed this job with adding to his resume being a actor with the Orpheum Players in Philadelphia, The Baker Stock Company in Oregon and the Crescent Theatre in Brooklyn, New York.
When he moved to Los Angeles, he worked as the manager for the Majestic Theater in Los Angeles with his brother alongside him as the business manager during the early 1920's.
In 1922, he finally made his film debut in, "Two Much Business". He continued working as a silent film actor and when the era of "talkies" came about, it was not difficult for him to make the switch. He appeared in a number of Warner Brothers early "talkies" such as, "Hottentot" and "ISonny Boy" (both 1929).
This roles that followed were many, one of the better known films was the role of Professor Nick Potter in, "Holiday" (1930) and again in 1938, he repeated this same role for the same film remade by director, George Cukor. He also appeared in the film, "Pocketful of Miracles" (1961) with his long time companion, actor, Gavin Gordon. He was best known for his talent working as a character actor in a number of supporting roles such as on, "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1944) and "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941).
In total, Edward appeared in over 120 films and was also a well known television actor appearing in such shows as, "The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre" (1948-1949), "Rocky and His Friends" (1959-1960), and "Dennis the Menace" (1962-1963) amongst others. He never neglected his stage career, mostly continuing to appear in summer stock.
