EDWARD ASNER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Edward Asner was born on November 15th, 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri to parents Lizzie and Morris David Asner.  He was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family  near Kansas City.  He attended Wyandotte High School and then attended the University of Chicago.  After graduating from college he joined the United States Army Signal Corps and became involved in acting when he would appear on stage in plays that toured Army camps entertaining the troops in Europe.  When he completed his military service he decided to join the Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago for a bit and then relocated to New York City.   He began working on Broadway appearing in such productions as, "Three Penny Opera and soon was receiving television roles.

Asner made appearances on such television series as, "The Outlaws" (1962), "The Reporter", "Mission: Impossible", "The Invaders", "Thunder Alley", "The Bronx Zoo" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip".    

His most famous well known role was on, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (1970), playing character Lou Grant.  then when this show ended, a spin off series was made "Lou Grant" (1977-1982), which was a one hour drama series about journalism.
 
Along with his television acting work, he has also been involved in a number of voice over projects such as on the television series, "Spider-Man", "Gargoyles", "Freakazoid!", "The Boondocks" and he did the voice work for, Jabba the Hutt on the radio version of, "Star Wars" and Master Vrook from "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic".  His most recent voice over work was on the Walt Disney animated film, "Up" (2009). 

Other recent roles Asner has done include appearing on the Jay Leno, "The Tonight Show", the Country Music television comedy, "Regular Joe" and "Working Class" (2011).  

He has also received a number of honors throughout his career such as in 2001, being the recipient of the, Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and he was won more Emmy Awards then any other male actor.  He was also inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 2003 and has served two terms as President of the Screen Actors Guild.    

Along with a very strong professional career, Asner remains very involved in politics and is a member of the Campaign for Peace and Democracy as well as being a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.  He is also very involved in the movement to establish single-payer health care in California and participates in a number of charities.  

Asner has married a total of three times, first to Nancy Sykes from 1959 until 1988. Together they have three children, Kate and twins Matthew and Liza.  His second wife is, Carol Jean Vogelman and together they had a son, named Charles.  Then in 1998 he married Cindy Gilmore, a producer and they divorced in 2007.
