EARL HOLLIMAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Earl Holliman was born on September 11th, 1928 in Delhi, Louisiana with the birth name Henry Earl Holliman. His father passed away before he was born and his biological mother gave him up for adoption as she was unable to financially support her family. His adoptive father passed away when he was thirteen years old and he found work as an usher at a movie theater. He saved up every penny he made and moved to Hollywood. However, he was unable to find work there, and so he returned to Louisiana.
He joined the navy during World War II lying about his age and was assigned to the Navy Communications School in Los Angeles. After a year of being in the navy, his true age was revealed and he was discharged. He then attended UCLA and studied at the Pasadena Playhouse before he finally got a break in the comedy film, "Scared Stiff" (1953). He continued in the film industry mostly in westerns and dramas and soon won a Golden Globe Award for his role in, "The Rainmaker" (1956) starring Katherine Hepburn, Burt Lancaster, Wendell Corey and Lloyd Bridges.
As Earl's career progressed he worked on a number of 'A' rated films such as, "Broken Lance" (1954) starring Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark, Hugh O'Brian and Katy Jurado, "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957) starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster, "Giant" (1956) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Chill Wills, Dennis Hopper and James Dean, "Visit to a Small Planet" (1960), "Summer and Smoke" (1961) and "The Sons of Katie Elder" (1965) starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, Michael Anderson Jr., Martha Hyer, George Kennedy, Dennis Hopper, James Gregory, John Doucette.
As he began to notice in the 60's that film roles were becoming less available to him, he turned to working on television. He was cast in the series, "The Wide Country" and guest starred in the ABC drama series, "Bus Stop" (1962). He was also cast on "Police Woman" (1974-1978) starring Angie Dickinson. Holliman also appeared in the first episode of, "The Twilight Zone" (1959). Earl also opened his own theater, the Fiesta Dinner Theatre in San Antonio, Texas in 1980 and the theater closed in 1987.
Earl Holliman was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Television Industry and is also very known for his work as an animal-rights activist in which he has served for more then twenty five years as president of an organization called, Actors and Others for Animals".
