DOROTHY LAMOUR BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Dorothy Lamour was born on December 10th, 1914 in New Orleans, Louisiana with the birth name Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton. She was very beautiful and always had dreams of pursuing a career as a singer. In 1931, she won a beauty contest as Miss. New Orleans and then decided to move to Chicago and search for work as a singer.
While seeking employment she worked as an elevator operator before getting a job as a vocalist for the Herbie Kay band. In 1935, she married the band leader, Herbie Kay and they remained together for four years. Alongside her job as a vocalist for the band, she also worked on a Chicago radio program as a singer.
She went to Hollywood in 1936 and made her film debut for Paramount Pictures on, "The Jungle Princess" and "College Holiday" (1936). She was so beautiful and well received by the public that she was then cast in a number of films such as, "Typhoon" (1940), "Johnny Apollo" (1940), "Beyond the Blue Horizon" (1942) and "A Medal for Benny" (1945).
She was also very well known for her Bob Hope / Bing Crosby "Road" Pictures for Paramount. These were, "Road To Singapore" (1940), "Road to Zanzibar" (1941) "Road to Morocco" (1942), "Road To Utopia" (1946) and "Road to Bali" (1952). There was one another "Road" Film made but she was not cast in it and the last one being made it 1977 was not completed due to Bing Crosby's death.
Between 1951 and 1987, Lamour only made ten films as her career was slowing down. Her last film was , "Creepshow 2" (1987). Dorothy Lamour passed away on September 22nd, 1996 in Los Angeles, California from a heart attack at the age of eighty one. She was interred at Forest Lawn (Hollywood Hills) Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. After she and her first husband Kaye divorced in 1939 she married William Ross Howard III on April 7th, 1943 and the couple were together until his passing having two children.
Dorothy Lamour was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for motion picture and radio contributions.
