Donald Crisp ACTOR

Donald Crisp was born on September 12th, 1882 with the birth name George William Crisp in Bow London to parents James and Elizabeth Crisp.  Donald had a total of seven siblings, four sisters and three brothers.
He attended college at the University of Oxford and also fought for his country in the Boer War in South America as a member of the British Army.  He later returned to England to serve in the army intelligence section and by the second World War, he served with the US Army Reserves and became a Colonel.
When Crisp was traveling on a ship overseas to America, he would sing on the ship in various concerts and he caught the eye of John C. Fisher.  Fisher offered Crisp a job with his company and so Crisp spent his first year in America living in New York working in Grand Opera and the following year he worked for them as a stage manager.

It was back in 1910 that he began to develop an interest in the entertainment industry and started his career as a stage manager in a theater working with, George M. Cohan who was a entertainer, composer, playwright and director.  It was during this time that he also became acquainted with and good friends with another actor, D.W. Griffith
His first start in the film industry came with Biograph Company in New Jersey and working alongside his friend, D.W. Griffith.  When Griffith decided to relocate to Hollywood and try to make a name for himself there, Crisp followed in his footsteps.
Crisp first worked only as a personal assistant to Griffith and this sparked his interest in working as a director.  By the end of his career, he had directed over seventy films total.  He also became highly involved in the industry as a producer working as a liaison between the film industry and outside business interests.  Alongside a successful directing and producing career, Crisp also was a very talented actor, appearing in about 100 silent's between 1908 to 1930.  Some of these films were, "The Birth of a Nation" (1915) and "Broken Blossoms" (1919).

Over his career and seventy films that he directed, some of the more well known films were, "The Navigator" (1924) and "Don W. Son of Zorro" (1925).  After 1930, when the sound film era came about, Crisp decided to devote his career entirely to acting.  Some of his films during this period were, "The Little Minister" (1934), "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935) alongside Bette Davis and Henry Fonda.  He also appeared in, "Wuthering Heights" (1939), "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" (1939), "How Green Was My Valley" (1942) in which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor and "The Valley of Decision" (1945).
Donald Crisp married twice throughout his life, first to Marie Stark for a short period divorcing her on 1919.  His second marriage was to Jane Murfin from 1932 through 1944.  His final screen role was portraying a character, Grandpa Spencer in, "Spencer's Mountain" (1963), which was adapted from a novel written by Earl Hamner that was the inspiration for the hit TV series "The Waltons".

Even though he had reached financial success and could have returned, Crisp chose to work well into his 80's and he truly enjoyed the industry.  Over his fifty year career he made a variety of contributions to the entertainment industry, making it one of the top industries to work in.  He was a highly valued advisor and did a lot of work with Bank of America who was a leading source of working capital for the movie industry.
Just a couple years later, Crisp passed away on May 25th, 1974 in Van Nuys, California from complications from a series of strokes.  He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
