DON 'RED' BARRY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Don 'Red' Barry was born on January 11th, 1912 in Houston, Texas, USA with the birth name Donald Barry De Acosta.
Barry was a High School and college football star. He was working in advertising, but decided to leave that career and take a chance as an actor. He started out as a stage actor with a stock company and soon switched to film work. The majority of the characters he portrayed for the first four years of his career were those of henchmen and villains. His first film was with RKO called, "Night Waitress" (1936). In 1940, he appeared in the highly successful film, "Adventures of Red Ryder" hence where he took on the nickname "Red". He followed this role by larger budget films, but nothing amounted to the success he got from "Red Ryder". He starred in the film, "The Purple Heart" (1944) showing viewers he was a very talented actor, however he had a very bad attitude towards others in the industry and this would ultimately hurt his career.
As his career entered into the 1950's he continued to act on film, but he was not starring in as many westerns, instead he was working more as a supporting actor. He was also more involved in television work such as his role on the television series, "Maverick" (1961). He also briefly appeared in the last episode of, "Mickey Sitcom" (1965) starring Mickey Rooney. He also received a supporting role working with Sean Connery on, "Shalako" (1968).
It was not that his career had slowed down, but that his roles were less significant. He appeared eight times on the series, "The Virginian" in the 1960's and was also on two episodes of, "Little House on the Prairie". He continued to accept any role that came his way some even being unbilled and small supporting roles, but he managed to stay employed in the industry.
Don 'Red' Barry passed away on 17 July 1980, Hollywood, California, USA by committing suicide. Don was married twice during his lifetime, first to Peggy Stewart from 1940 to 1944 and he then married Barbara Patin in 1963, but the couple divorced, July 17th, 1980. They did have two children together.
