DeForest Kelley ACTOR

DeForest Kelley was born on January 20th, 1920 in Atlanta, Georgia with the birth name Jackson DeForest Kelley to parents Clora and Ernest David Kelley.  He had one older brother Ernest Casey Kelley and the boys were raised in Atlanta.  As a young boy he loved to sing and would sing in the church choir and even got some small work on radio.
After graduating from high school at the age of sixteen he used his talent as a singer singing at a Baptist Church where his father worked as the minister.  He then joined the united States Army Air Force and served for three years.
Upon completing his military service, he went to visit his uncle in Long Beach, California the trip was only scheduled for two weeks however, he loved California and stayed for a whole year.  When he came back to his family he shared with them his dream to pursue a career as an actor and informed them he was relocating to California for good to follow his dream.
With his mothers good wishes and regardless of his father's disappointment, he left for California and soon was seen by a paramount talent scout when he was working on a small film role for a naval training film.
Son he was appearing on such films as, "Fear in the Night" (1947) followed by roles in such films as, "Variety Girl" (1947), "Canon City" (1948) and "Duke of Chicago" (1949).  He then moved to New York with his wife and pursued stage acting for three years before coming back to California and finding work as a television actor.
He was seen on such shows as, "You Are There", "The Lone Ranger", "Wanted Dead or Alive", "Boots and Saddles", "Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater", "Death Valley Days", "Lawman" and "Bat Masterson".
DeForest mostly portrayed villain characters throughout his career, but towards the mid 60's he wanted to avoid being typecast and therefore he appeared in other films and television series showing his fans he was capable of playing a variety of roles.
In 1966 he was offered the biggest role of his career playing, Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in the television series, "Star Trek" (1966).  He played this role from 1966 through 1969 and later worked the same character role doing voice over work for, "Star Trek: The Animated Series" (1973-1974).  He also played the character in the first six Star Trek films that ran between 1979 and 1991.
When the television series came to an end he did have a hard type breaking away from the typecast character.  He did do some work on the film, "Night of the Lepus" (1972) and appearances on such television series as, "The Littlest Hobo" and his final project was doing voice over work on the Disney film, "The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars" (1998).

After retiring from the industry he chose to take up poetry and wrote two books, 'The Big Bird's Dream' and 'The Dream Goes On', however, he never published his own autobiography.
He was married only one time during his lifetime to Carolyn Dowling whom he wed in 1945 and the couple remained together until he passed away at the age of seventy nine on June 11th, 1999 in Woodland Hills, California after suffering from stomach cancer.  His remains were cremated and scattered throughout the Pacific Ocean.
