DAVID CARRADINE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

David Carradine was born on December 8th, 1936 in Hollywood, California with the birth name John Arthur Carradine.  His father, John Carradine was a famous character actor and David was the eldest son born onto a family highly involved in the entertainment industry.

After graduating from Oakland High School, Carradine went on to study at San Francisco College focusing on music theory and composition.  During college he wrote music from the school plays and realized he had an interest in drama, therefore, Carradine later decided to join the Shakespearean repertory company and gain some experience as an actor.

He took a brief break from learning his craft when in 1960 he was drafted into the United States Army, however directly after his discharge, Carradine went right back to pursuing his career.  He decided to relocate to New York and also changed his name to help avoid the confusion with his father's famous "John Carradine" name.  He tried to find work as a stage actor while supporting himself financially as a commercial artist.

Carradine was able to get some experience working as a stage actor in such Broadway productions as, "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" and "The Deputy".  He now felt ready to move back to Los Angeles and see if he could work in television or film with his current level of experience.

It did not take long for him to excel on the industry and add a number of television series and films to his resume.  He was first cast on the series, "Shane" (1966) and after some time some of the other television roles that followed throughout his career were on, "The Virginian" (1964), "Alfred Hitchcock" (1964-1965), "Ironside" (1968-1971) and "Gunsmoke" (1971).  David Carradine is mostly remembered for his role as the warrior monk, Kwai Chang Caine from the television series, "Kung Fu" (1972-1975).

On the film side, Carradine's resume included throughout his career over one hundred film roles.  Some of his better known roles were in such features as, "Mean Streets" (1973), "The Long Goodbye" (1973), "Death Race 2000" (1975), "Bound for Glory" (1976), "The Serpent's Egg" (1977), "Gray Lay down" (1978), "Circle of Iron" (1978), "The Long Riders" (1980), "North and South" (1985) and "Bird on a Wire" (1990).

He later returned to television to reprise his role of Kwai Chang Caine in the series, "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues" (1993-1997) which lasted a total of four seasons and he appeared in eighty eight episodes.

Directly following the series ending, Carradine was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Some of his later film roles were in, "Kill Bill: Vol I" (2003) and "Kill bill: Vol 2" (2004), ""Son of the Dragon" (2006), "Hell Ride" (2008), "Money to Burn" (2010) and a couple films that were released after his unusual passing, "Eldorado" (2011), "Night of the Templar" (2011) and "Mata Hari" (2012) which was being filmed in India at the time of his death.

Carradine had about twelve films that were still in post production when he passed away.  Most were just cameo roles and many were films made direct to DVD release, with his last lead role in the film, "Golden Boy" (2008).

His career spanned over four decades and along with his highly successful career in film, television and working as a stage actor he also managed to earn four Golden Globe nominations and also worked as a director on a number of projects.  Along with his acting he had a passion for music and over his career, Carradine recorded around sixty tracks where he not only sang but also played the piano, guitar and the flute.

Carradine was involved in directing a number of films and television episodes throughout his career such as three episodes of, "Kung Fu" as well as some independent films such as, "Americans" (1983), "You and Me" (1975) and two films that were never released, "Mata Hari" and "A Country Mile".

David Harradine's success as an actor, made it difficult on his personal life.  He had an unstable childhood and that carried over in her personal life where he battled substance abuse issues and also had a difficult time keeping a relationship together which was very prevalent in his marriages.  He was arrested a number of times for assault, possession of marijuana, attempted burglary and arrested twice for DUI's.

He married a total of five times throughout his lifetime with his first marriage being to Donna Lee Becht in 1960 through 1968.  He had one child with his first wife, and then married wife number two, Linda Gilbert in 1977 and also had one child with her before this marriage ended in 1983.

Carradine then chose to marry for a third time to Gail Jensen in 1988 and they had no children together before this marriage also ended in 1997.  Marina Anderson was his fourth wife whom he wed in 1998 and again another unsuccessful marriage which ended in 2001.  His fifth and final wife was Annie Carradine from 2004 until he passed away on June 3rd, 2009 at the age of seventy two.  Carradine was found dead in Bangkok, Thailand with the result of his death being concluded as the result of, autoerotic asphyxiation.  He was buried at Forest Lawn memorial Park.
