DANA WYNTER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Dana Wynter was born on June 8th, 1931 in Berlin, Germany with the birth name Dagmar Winter. She was the daughter of a surgeon and was raised in England. When her father went to visit some friends in Southern Rhodesia and decided to stay there so he brought out Wynter and her step mom to live with him there.
When she was old enough to be on her own, Wynter relocated to Rhode Island and enrolled in pre-med at Rhodes University in a class of 150 make students, her being the only female. While in school, she also became involved in theater and participated in the school production, "Through a Glass Darkly". After only completing one year of schooling, she decided to move back to England and change her career goals. She wanted to see if she could pursue a career as an actress.
Dana found work in a play in Hammersmith and then was approached by an American agent who asked if he could represent her. So in 1953, she picked up and relocated to New York City. She found television work in such shows as, "Robert Montogmery Presents" (1950), "Suspense" (1949) and "Studio One in Hollywood" (1948). She soon decided if she was going to remain working as an actress she needed to be where all the action was at and so chose to relocate to Hollywood.
She began with small roles on a number of British films such as, "Lady Godiva Rides Again" (1951). In 1955 she signed a seven year contract with 20th Century Fox. She won a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer and she found film work as well as more television roles in series such as, "The Man Who Never Was" (1966) and the film, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956).
Some of her other film work included roles in, "Sink the Bismarck!" (1960), "On the Double" (1961) and "The List of Adrian Messenger" (1963). The latter part of her career involved a number of television appearances such as, "Airport" (1970), "Twelve O'clock High" (1964-1966) and on the series, "The Man Who Never Was" (1966-1967).
She also enjoyed writing and in 1980 she took up journalism and wrote for an English newspaper.
Dana married only once to a Hollywood divorce attorney, Gregson Edward Bautzer on June 10th, 1956 and remained with her husband until January 28th, 1981 after having one child.
On May 5th, 2011, Dana Wynters passed away in Ojai, California from congestive heart failure.
