DANA ANDREWS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Dana Andrews was born on January 1st, 1909 with the birth name Carver Dana Andrews. He was born on a farm just outside of Collins, Covington county, Mississippi. He was the third of nine children to Anice and Charles Forrest Andrews who was a Baptist Minister. His family moved to Texas and settled in Huntsville.
Andrews attended college in Houston and studies business administration. He worked briefly as an accountant for Gulf & Westerns.
In 1931, Andrews relocated to Los Angeles, California seeking employment as a singer. He worked at various jobs to make money and at one gas station he worked at a fellow employee believed Andrews had talent and agreed to pay for him to study Opera and also study at the Pasadena Playhouse, a well known acting school.
Following his schooling, Andrews signed a contract with Samuel Goldwyn and finally nine years later, due to the war time shortage of leading men, he booked his first movie role in, "The Westerner" (1940) starring Gary Cooper, Doris Davenport, Walter Brennan, Tom Tyler, Lucien Littlefield, Charles Halton, Forrest Tucker, Lillian Bond, Fred Stone, Paul Hurst, Trevor Bardette and Chill Wills. Three years later, he starred in, "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943) starring with Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn and Harry Morgan, which is known as one of his better films done early on in his career.
His film career continued with roles on, "Laura" (1944) with Gene Tierney, "Purple Heart" (1944), "Where The Sidewalk Ends" (1950) and "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) also starring Fredric March, Myrna Loy, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, Harold Russell, Ray Teal, Hoagy Carmichael, Ray Collins, Cathy O'Donnell and Steve Cochran, which was an Oscar winning film.
By 1950, Andrews was battling alcohol addiction and his career was beginning to struggle drastically. He was only getting cast in supporting roles and character parts in B rated films such as, "Zero Hour" (1957), "The Crowded Sky" (1960), "In Harm's Way" (1965) starring alongside John Wayne, Brandon De Wilde, Kirk Douglas, Burgess Meredith, Patricia Neal, Tom Tryon, Henry Fonda, Franchot Tone, Heorge Kennedy, James Mitchum, Carroll O'Connor, Larry Hagman, Jill Haworth and Sterling Hollaway and "Airport 1975" (1974).
He was however, elected as president of SAG, Screen Actors Guild in 1963 and by 1972, Andrews had turned his life around and become sober. He was one of the first celebrities to ever appear in a public service announcement for AA.
In addition to his film work, Dana Andrews also starred and co-starred in a number of Television series such as, "Bright Promise", "American Girls" and "Falcon Crest" starring Jane Wyman and Robert Foxworth to name a few. He made his final screen appearance in, "Prince Jack" (1984).
Andrews was married twice, first to Janet Mauray in 1932, sadly she passed away in 1935 not long after the birth of his first son David. In 1939 he married actress Mary Todd and together they had three children. Even though Andrews was quite wealthy, he lived a modest life in Studio City, California. During the latter years of his life, he suffered from Alzheimer's disease and on December 17th, 1992 he died of congestive heart failure and pneumonia.
