CLORIS LEACHMAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Cloris Leachman was born on April 30th, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa to Berkley Claiborne 'Buck' Leachman and Cloris Wallace and is the oldest of three daughters. When she earned her high school diploma she enrolled at Illinois State University and later transferred to Northwestern University majoring in Drama.
Her involvement in the entertainment industry began when she entered a beauty contest and won the title of Miss. Chicago in 1946. She then began working as a stage actress and gained a number of years experience before breaking into the television and film industry.
Soon she was appearing on such television shows as, "The Ford Theatre Hour" (1948) and "Bob and Ray" (1951). A number of film roles soon followed, "Kiss me Deadly" (1955), "The Rack" (1956), "The Chapman Report" (1962) and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford an Katharne Ross.
She mostly focused on television work during this time adding such credits as, "Rawhide", "Climax!", "Gunsmoke", "Twilight Zone", "Hawaiian Eye, "Route 66", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Laramie", "The Defenders", "Mr. Novak", "77 Sunset Strip", "Perry Mason", "Dr. Kildare", "The Big Valley" and "Frontier Circus".
From 1970 through 1977 she played Phyllis Lindstrom on, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" which later became, "Phyllis" (1975). For this role she won a Golden Globe as Leading Performer. In 1973 she won her first Emmy for her role on the television movie, "A Brand New Life". Over the course of her career she has won a total of nine Emmy's.
Other television roles include, "The Facts of Life" (1986), "Walter and Emily" (1991-1992), "The Powers That Be" (1992-1993), "Promised Land" (1996-1997) and most recent, "Raising Hope" (2010-2012).
Although, television has been her focus she has still appeared on numerous feature films some of which include, "Young Frankenstein" (1974), "High Anxiety" (1977) and "History of the World: Part I" (1981).
Along with film and television work she did voice over work for such projects as the film, "Castle in the Sky", "Mt Little Pony: The Movie", "The Iron Giant" and the animated television series, "The Simpsons".
She has married only once to George Englund in 1953 and they had five children before the marriage came to an end in 1978. All five of her children also pursued a career in the entertainment industry. Sadly, in 1986, her son Bryon passed away from an overdose of Ulcer medication.
She has not re-married again and has remained working in the industry earning her second Emmy for her role on, "Malcolm in the Middle" (2000). Also at the age of eighty two, Leachman, set a record being the oldest contestant on the reality show, "Dancing with the Stars" (2005). In 2011, she was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
Cloris Leachman remains working without slowing down and her most recent roles have been in the films, "Gambit" (2012), "Adult World" (2012), "Raging Bull II" (2013), "Timberwolf" (2012) and no release date yet for, "The Home".
