CLAIRE BLOOM BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Claire Bloom was born on February 15th, 1931 in London, England with the birth name Patricia Claire Blume, born to Edward and Elizabeth Blume. She received her early education at Badminton School in Bristol and Fern Manor in New Milton. From a young age she showed an interest in the performing arts and later received some formal stage training from the Guildhall School and later also studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Her professional career as an actress began with her being cast on BBC radio and soon she was working as a stage actress appearing in such productions as, "It Depends What You Mean" (1946) and "The Lady's Not For Burning" (1947). She then followed by a taking on a number of Shakespeare productions such as, "Hamlet", "King John" and "The Winter's Tale".
Bloom then began to break into the film industry with her debut in 1948 on, "The Blind Goddess" followed by some more prominent roles in such features as, "Limelight" (1952) co-starring with Charlie Chaplin, "Richard III" (1955), "Alexander the Great" (1956) co-starring with Richard Burton and Fredric March, "The Brothers Karamazov" (1958) starring Yul Brynner and "The Buccaneer" (1958) again co-starring with the great Yul Brynner.
Although, she was having quite a successful career in films, Bloom did not neglect her love for the stage and continued adding such production credits to her resume in, "Richard III", "The Trojan Woman", "Vivat! Vivat! Regina!" and "A Doll's House".
As her career entered into the 60's there was no sign of things slowing down. She continued to grace the big screen in such features as, "Look Back in Anger" (1959), "The Haunting" (1963) starring alongside Julie Harris and Russ Tamblyn, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (1965), "The Illustrated Man" (1969) and "Three Into Two Won't Go" (1969).
In addition to film and stage work, Bloom also appeared in a variety of television movies such as, "Backstairs at the White House" (1979), "Brideshead Revisited" (1981), "Separate Tables" (1983) and "Shadowlands" (1985).
Most recently, Bloom has been seen on the television Soap Opera, "As the World Turns" in 1993, the television miniseries, "The Ten Commandments" (2006), the television movie, "Fiona's Story" (2008) and the television series, "New Tricks" (2008) and "The Bill" (2010).
She has also written two memoirs, "Limelight and After: The Education of an Actress" (1982) and "Leaving a Doll's House: A Memoir" (1996).
Claire Bloom has married three times throughout her lifetime, first to actor Rod Steiger in 1959 and they had one child together before the marriage came to an end in 1969. She then wed Hillard Elkins in 1969, however by 1972 another marriage ended in divorce. Her third husband was Philip Roth whom she wed in 1990 and again by 1995, Bloom was divorced. She has not re-married but remains working in the industry with her last three known roles appearing back on the big screen in, the Academy Award winner for Best Picture "The King's Speech" (2010), "While We Were Here" (2012) and soon to release, "Max Rose".
