Charles Starrett ACTOR

Charles Starrett was born on March 28th, 1903 in Athol, Massachusetts and he was the youngest of nine children.  His father was Leroy Starrett, who owned the Starrett Precision Tool Company.  Charles graduated from Worcester Academy High School.
Charles attended college at Dartmouth College and was also on the varsity football team.  When Paramount Pictures used part of the football team for a film, Charles had his first chance at working as an extra on screen in the film, "The Quarterback" (1926).

After he graduated from college, he decided after that experience as working as an extra, he wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

He began with stage acting, joining a stock company and touring with them for a couple years throughout the New England States.  It was when he performed in a Broadway play titled, "Claire Adams" that a Paramount  scout saw him and became interested.  He was signed to play the lead in the film, "Fast and Loose" (1930).  Film roles were being offered to him from all different angles and he was also very involved in organizing the Screen Actors Guild, known as (SAG).

He was a very handsome man with a very athletic build and therefore, in 1936, he signed with Columbia and  he was chosen to be their next Western star.  He starred in over 115 Westerns such as, "Mysterious Avenger"(1936), "Stampede" (1936), "Two Gun Law" (1936) and "Outlaw of the Praire" (1937), to name a few.  He also did briefly return back to his football days and work on a film titled, "Start Cheering" (1938).

Charles became known by many as the, "Durango Kid" who first appeared in 1940 and as his career progressed, for the most part, the Durango kid was the only character he really portrayed.  The "Durango Kid" character was actually discontinued in 1940 but then revived in 1944 to 1952.  As 'B' movie Westerns began to fade out in the early 1950's, Charles felt it was time to retire from his acting career at the age of fourty eight.

Charles Starrett only married once to Mary McKinnon and the couple had two children together.  He passed away on March 22nd, 1986 in Borrego Springs, California from cancer.  He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale California.
