CHARLES COBURN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Charles Coburn was born on June 19th, 1877 in Savannah, Georgia with the birth name Charles Douville Coburn.  He was born to parents, Emma Louise Sprigman and Moses Douville Coburn.  He was raised in Savannah Georgia and developed an interest in acting at an early age.  He would work various jobs at the local theater such as a doorman and usher.   Charles soon was promoted to theater manager and in 1901 began appearing on the Broadway stage.

In 1905 he formed an acting company with his first wife Ivah Wills and they began appearing together in a number of Broadway productions.

It was not until after he lost his wife in 1937 that he decided to continue acting and relocated to Hollywood to begin working as a film actor at the age of sixty.  He did remarry to Winifred Natzka in 1959 and they remained together until he passed away.

Throughout his acting career he worked on such films as "The More the Merrier" (1943) for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.  He also starred in a number of other films, "The Devil and Miss Jones" (1941), "The Green Years" (1946), "Kings Row" (1942), "The Paradine Case" (1947), "Everybody Does It" (1950), "Has Anybody Seen My Gal" (1952) "Trouble Along the Way" (1953) starring John Wayne and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) starring Marilyn Monroe amongst others.

Coburn passed away on August 30th, 1961 in New York City, New York from a heart attack and was survived by his 2nd wife and never had any biological children.  He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry.  Coburn also served as vice-president of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals.  This was an organization that opposed alleged Communists in Hollywood during the Cold War.
