CELESTE HOLM BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Celeste Holm was born on April 29th, 1917 in New York City, New York as an only child to parents, Theodor and Jean Holm. She attended the University of Chicago and studied drama. When she was just nineteen, she made her stage debut on Broadway and continued to perform in a number of plays such as, "The Women", "Oklahoma" and Bloomer Girl amongst others.
In 1946, Holm was signed by Twentieth Century Fox and made her film debut in, "Three Little Girls in Blue" starring alongside George Montgomery, Vera Ellen, Vivian Blaine and June Haver. In 1947, Holm won Best Supporting Actress for her role in, "Gentlemen's Agreement" also starring Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, John Garfield and June Havoc.
As her career progressed she appeared in a number of films such as, "Come to the Stable" (1949) co-starring Loretta Young, Hugh Marlowe, Elsa Lanchester and Regis Toomey and "All About Eve" (1950) starring with Bette Davis, Hugh Marlowe, George Sanders, Barbara Bates, Gary Merrill and Thelma Ritter, both of which she earned Academy Award nominations.
For the most part she spent the remainder of her career working as a stage actress as that was her first and true love of acting. She did do a couple more films and also had her own sitcom television series called, "Honestly Celeste!" (1954) for 8 episodes.
Holm appeared in several tv shows such as "Climax!", "Zane Grey Theatre", "Burke's Law" "Checkmate", and "Magnum, P.I." starring Tom Selleck.
She also teamed up with stars Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Orson Welles, Angela Lansbury and Anthony Franciosa in "The Long, Hot Summer" (1966)
Celeste Holm married a total of five times throughout her life. First was to Ralph Nelson whom she married in 1936 and had one child with before divorcing in 1939. Her second marriage was to Francis Emerson Harding Davies whom she married on January 7th, 1940 and was together with for five years. Her third marriage was to A. Schuylet Dunning from 1946 through 1953 in which they had one child, but this marriage too ended in a divorce. Holm's married for a fourth time to Wesley Addy on May 22nd, 1966 and they stayed together until he passed away on December 31st, 1996. Her fifth and final marriage was to Frank Basile and she remains with him today.
In 1992 she was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame and in 2006 she was also presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the SunDeis Film Festival at Brandeis University.
Today, Holm tours occasionally with her one person show, "An Intimate Evening with Celeste" where she relates stories from her long film career, followed by readings from writer Ruth Draper.
She has been honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Celeste Holm passed away in New York on July 15, 2012 at the age of ninety five.
