CARROLL O'CONNOR BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Carroll O'Connor was born on August 2nd, 1924 in Manhattan, New York with the birth name John Carroll O'Connor. He was raised in Queens, New York and after graduating from Newtown High School he went on to join the Merchant Marines.
After completing his service he enrolled at the University of Montana in 1946 and studied English. It was during this time that he developed an interest in theater. He relocated to Ireland and continued studying theater at the National University of Ireland. It was here that he was discovered and asked to appear at the Dublin Gate Theater where he worked until 1954. He then returned back to New York City and tried to get a job on Broadway so instead found work teaching high school until 1958. Carroll also worked at the Julliard School of Fine Arts as an acting and dialogue professor.
In late 1958 he landed a job on an Off-Broadway production called, "Ulysses in Nighttown" and then finally got a role on Broadway in, "God and Kate Murphy" working as an understudy and stage manager.
During the 60's O'Connor appeared in several top notch films beginning with "Lonely Are the Brave" (1962) starring Kirk Douglas, Gena Rowlands, Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and then the blockbuster "Cleopatra" (1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Roddy McDowall, Hume Cronyn, Cesare Danova and Martin Landau, "In Harm's Way" (1965) starring alongside John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal, Tom Tryon, Paula Prentiss, Stanley Holloway, Burgess Meredith, Brandon de Wilde, Jill Haworth, Dana Andrews, Franchot Tone, George Kennedy, Hugh O'Brian, Bruce Cabot, Slim Pickens, Barbara Bouchet, Larry Hagman and Henry Fonda and rounding out the decade with "The Devil's Brigade" (1968) starring William Holden, Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards, Andrew Prine, Jeremy Slate, Claude Akins, Jack Watson, Richard Jaeckel, Richard Dawson, Tom Troupe, Luke Askew, Harry Carey Jr., Michael Rennie and Dana Andrews.
Carroll was now also getting offered television roles such as on a pilot called, "Those Were The Days" (1968) which later was re-shot and aired as, "All in the Family" (1968-1969) which ran for twelve years and 307 episodes. He also appeared on, "Archie Bunker's Place" (1979) and "In the Heat of the Night" (1988) which he also served as an executive producer.
O'Connor married only once to Nancy O'Connor on July 28th, 1951 and they remained together until he passed away on June 21st, 2001 in Culver City, California from a heart attack that was a result of him suffering from diabetes. He had just one child during his lifetime, a son, Hugh O'Connor whom was adopted and who passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
His son had a major drug addiction and O'Connor became a spokesperson for Partnership for Drug Free America from 1993-1997. He was also awarded a Golden Globe for best television actor in a musical/comedy series for his role in, "All in the Family" as well as an Emmy for outstanding lead actor for the same series. Carroll O'Connor was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to television.
Carroll O'Connor is buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
