By the age of fifty he began appearing in small parts on a number of silent films such as, "John Glayde's Honor" and "The Builder of Bridges" (both 1915).
He did not make his real mark on the industry until the 1930's when sound films came about.  Some of his more prominent roles included, "Wee Willie Winkie" (1937) starring Shirley Temple, "The Four Feathers" (1939) co-starring John Clements, Ralph Richardson and June Duprez, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941) starring Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman, "And Then There Were None" (1945) starring Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston and "Unconquered" (1947) starring Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard.
In addition to making a name for himself as an actor, he was also a cricketer when he played during college.  In 1932, he founded the Hollywood Cricket Club.
